nico search == fail

it was right after that thread about ebay puley sets, the guy who was going to have somebody make more aluminum crank pulleys

where did that thread go? anyone remember the thread starters name, or have a link to it? (did it ever go thru?)

if not, i have a mad-scientist type machine guy, he collects machines (milling machines, lathes, you name it) and has stupid low prices for quality work... he just likes to do one-off type things, not mass production like most places, and does most of it by hand.

anyway, if that thing never when thru, ill see if he will copy the one lightweight pulley i have (and try a few different configurations with tooth wheels. i had him put a stock ford 36 -1wheel on an extra CA18DET crank pulley, in the blank space between the AC and PS.. and its perfect, just need to run a 3 or 2 rib belt for the AC now. want to try sticking the tooth wheel behinfd teh pulley, and see if a sensor will read it.

either way, anyone remember that thread?

yeah, thats the one

i want to get one (or more) of them, if theyre available now... so my mad scientist machine guy can stick trigger wheels on them, and expirament with location... just want to get it done while i can (this guy is awesome.. anything you want one off, customization, modification, and dirt cheap) if i can get one that already exists tho, everything would go faster

just want to get the parts in my stockpile so ill have them later on, when i have the time to do the testing

I am really glad this topic came up i had a few questions about lightweight pullies. i have had and seen a bunch of different engines act differently when the pullies were added. some engines i had really liked it and others it would end up blowing up the oil pump or throw a rod and such. i really couldn't figure it out but what i have come to understand is that it just threw off the harmonics of the engine or something to that effect. some engines are more sensative than others and i guess my question is that is the CA18 one of those types of engines that are very sensative to lightweight pullies? and has anyone had any extended use with them? and what were the results and what kinda power levels are we looking at while in use? thanks guys.

they dont call the crank pully a harmonic ballancer for nothin. I hear its a good way to snap a cranshaft .

lets get facts straight here. Some engines, have a harmonic balancer on them, to keep the motor in balance.

ca18's are internally balanced. this means our pulley does nothing to keep "that" in check. The only thing our stock pulley has is for the a/c system, which when fired up, makes a huge draw on the motor, and has a blancer on it for when this happens. This is to protect the motor. If you dont have a/c, your heavy arse stock pulley does nothing but lug your motor.

Now it wont make as much difference as a flywheel. But weight is weight, plain and simple.

True sometimes I have a hard time putting 1&1 together.

Lightweight crank pulley, im down! I would buy one because it would suit my rebuilt CA. I wont be running AC so i wont have to use the stock and heavier pulley. What type of material? Aluminum?

I hate it when I type a long reply and forget to log in. So i click "post" and it looses everything.

OKay, I was the one that brought up a lightweight crank pulley. I needed about 10 ppl interested, and it was gonna be billet aluminum, with timing marks, slightly underdrive waterpump.

I let the thread die cause i saw more pulleys coming on ebay. I figured that they were gonna make the crank pulley also. Since ppl are still interested I will talk some more to my boss tomorrow and go back online.

The factory pulley has rubber inside of it, to act as a vibration dampner, and keep harmonic frequencies down in the crankshaft. TBCH, I wouldnt ever consider ridding the motor of this.

Just a question,

We swap ca18's into older cars, so we do not use A/C nor pwr steering.

Is it possible to have a machine shop cut off the a/c and pwr steering of the damper?

prolly not, but not 100% sure......i say no because I think you'd ruin that rubber inner layer, and the pulley would shear itself spinning freely.
