i need a switched supply of power to operate some elec fans. i have them now hooked directly to the battery with an adjustable thermo switch and need to have a switched supply. by that i mean something that gets voltage when the key is turned to on. but not when the key is off. and it needs to be under the hood, for simplicity sake. i would as a last resort use something like splice into the radio power supply.

so if anyone knows of a switched supply under the hood thats easily accessible, please let us know.

I rewired the fan relay to turn the fan on when when the key is in the on position. Open up the relay box where the fan relay is, cut the orange wire with a blue stripe that goes to the fan relay, tape up the end that isnt attached to the relay. For the part that is attached, either ground it or wire your thermo switch in between that and ground. Cut the blue with with an orange stripe and either splice the part that attaches to the relay into one of the black wires with a white stripe that goes to the fuel pump relay, or place your switch in between the wires.

I hope that makes sense... I am under the influence right now, so what makes perfect sense to me may not to you :)

If you have an adjustable thermostat, personally, I would leave it hooked up to constant power, and not an ignition power. When your car is hot, and you kill it, the fan will continue to run until it cools the radiator down. This is how a lot of cars come from the factory. If you hook it up to ignition power, the fan will shut off automatically whenever you kill the car. If shut down hot, your car won't cool down as much.

But, if you want to hook to ignition, there should be plenty of places in the fuse box under the hood. However, don't just run the power straight from the fuse box. Use a relay to suppy power from the battery to your thermostat that switches on when it sees power from something that's ignition controlled in the fuse box.

thanks for the link but i read it before and i dont want to have to do surgery on a relay.

i have it hooked directly to the battery now and this is what it does. i ran the car to let it warm up thoroughly. after turning the car off the fan keeps going and going. i adjusted the switch so it comes on warmer but still it continues to run after shutting down. last night i had to open the hood for it to cool down thoroughly and turn the fan off.

i am major ignorant when it comes to relays and what not. and also my old a/c fan does not work. somehow when i was gutting the a/c i did something to cause the fan not to work and the little light on the climate control that says the a/c is working does not work anymore.

thanks for the suggestions. if there are anymore i'm all ears. thanks

Yeah, but you do realize that the S13 has no stock fan to relay into right? That is all fine and danvdy for someone w/ an S14, but a S13 cannot use those instructions.

An s13 with AC has a fan and relay. I am using the stock fan and relay right now.

and my a/c doesn't work properly so the condenser fan does not work, yet.

but i had a chance this weekend to get into it and here it is. found this nice pretty black w/ red stripe wire under the fuse block behind the battery. this wire is to power the fuel pump (and somerthing else i cant remember). i have a few pics of the fans installed and all tucked away if anyone is interested

If you care about safety/reliability, I would recomend you tap into the black/white-stripe wire that goes to the fuel pump relay. That line is protected by a regular 10 amp fuse in the engine bay fuse box. The black/red-stripe wire is hooked into a 30 amp fusable link that directly or indirectly (through a relay) powers everything tied to the ignition switch. You are more likely to have a spare regular 10 amp fuse than a fusable link lying around.

If this doesnt bother you, or you dont care, please disregard everything I just said. :)

that brings up an interesting point. will this line support an electric fan? i chose the main line because i felt the fan would draw too much current for the 10 amp fuse to handle.

and i forgot to mention that the black/red wire operates a relay. which turns on the fans. so its not really running the fans, just flipping the switch.

I'd like to know how many amps the a/c fan on a DOHC s13 pulls.

I tapped it into the ACC relay, so the fan is on when the car is on.
