I shy away from a permanent install -- it will put unsightly holes in the dash and/or leave a bracket behind when someone smashes your window to steal that portable unit you bought. What I'm saying is do not permanently install it so it's visable to anyone that happens to be walking past your car. Too many crack heads that would smash and grab for their next crack fix.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 that's 2 years old - I really like it. It will run for up to 4 hours on its internal battery and it's the size of a deck of cards so I can take it when walking in NYC or Boston on biz. If I need a longer run time, I can plug it in to the cig lighter socket. They also sell a full suite of international maps to download if you ever plan to go to Asia or Europe.
I also bought one of those small "sticky mats" for the dash, that's designed to keep your cell phone from sliding around, and I'll often just toss that on the dash with the Nuvi on top. As it gives me vocal turn by turn instructions, I do NOT need to see the map. If I do, I can just pick it up and glance at the screen.
The included suction cup winshield mount works great too -- I've had it in about 25 diff. rental cars with no problems. Good luck.
