Does anyone know what would be involved in finding a headlight wiring harness/relays to handles a higher wattage bulb? I would like to get some more powerful bulbs for the car since I live in a rural area with low lit areas and dear in the road. It would help. I was told that the factory system cannot safely/longterm handle more than the 55/65 stock setup. I have seen some 80/100 watt bulbs for sale and would like the extra light.

Thanks, Robert Cole 93 J30 Birmingham, AL.

Robert - There will always be a weak link somewhere unless you want to put in some extensive re-wiring all the way back to the source.

Swap out to the Sylvania Silverstars - Brightest standard wattage bulbs on the market (outperformed a higher wattage PIAA).

I think you'll be quite pleased.

suvlights.com sells a harness and relay setup that is plug and play. It provides all the wiring you need. It connects directly to the battery, and only uses the stock wiring to trigger the relay, so current draw on the stock wiring isn't an issue. 80/100W H4 bulbs will outperform any stock wattage bulbs. I've had some in my car for about 4 months now without any problems and the amount of light/beam pattern you get is very good for DOT spec lights.

The only downside is that the harness triggers the "headlamp inoperative" warning on odometer that will be on any time the low beams are on, and will stay with the lights off. You can get rid of it with the lights off by turning the high beams on, then turning the lights off without switching back to the low beams (you can move the stalk back to the low beam position once the lights are off).

edit:

I just noticed the orignal poster has a J30 rather than a Q45. I'm not sure which bulbs the J30 uses, but there is probably a similar setup available for them.
