We just bought a 91 Q45 about 4 days ago with 192000 miles. After reading about the timing guides I have become concerned. The previous owner had it maintained on a regular basis at the Infiniti dealer and saved all reciepts to the car from 93 up to the present but they never had the timing guides changed. I found a recipe for all of the parts that you need to replace in addition to the guides and I was wondering if I can get by with the guides only? Please help.

Thanks, MattJacksonville, FL

P.S. I had to create an account with another e-mail site in order to become a member here because when I would put in my current e-mail address it would say my current e-mail address is already registered. My current e-mail address is [email protected]. If there is any way possible, I would like to use my current e-mail address rather than the one that I had to create because my current e-mail address is also my DSL provider.

thanks

Do a search here on chain guides to find exactly what parts to replace. Some sources say to replace chains, but it's rarely necessary. Labor is the big expense. With nearly 200K it's probably only worth it if you DIY.

While 911/Q45 knows a lot more than I do, I would consider replacing the chains at 192K as stretch is known to be a problem at 250K. I would have an oil pump chain and all tenionsers on hand.

If you are missing any guides material, be sure to read the oil pan thread as a lift is almost mandatory to pull engine up for oil pan access.

I have found out something that pleases me. I talked to a parts man at Atlantic Infiniti today to see if he could pull up any records of the timing guides ever being replaced when the preveous owner had taken it there for all of its life for maintenance. Well He did not find any info on it being done but he did talk to the Mechanic that worked on the car on his days off. He said that he replaced all of the guides with the updated versions with metal inserts. To confirm this, I talked to the Neighbor that sold the car for the owner who then asked her about the guides and she said that he did replace the guides. Though she could not remember exactly what year it was.

So I have a load off my mind now.

Next thing is the steering rack. When I turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and then straighten the wheels the steering wheel stays slightly to the left. Same goes for turning it right. elWESso69 said that it sounds like the steering rack bushings. The boots are also bad and it leaks fluid.Should I replace the rack do to the fluid leakage or just replace the bushings and leave it leak?

Rack bushings and the rack need to be replaced. Lots of good recent threads (last week or newer) on steering racks.
