hey-

92 G50i lost reverse. 1 will move if i rev it to 4K slowly, and 3rd and 4th work fine- been driving to work through hilly SF every morning, last 2 weeks now.

i need a trans. unless this sympton is caused by bad TC, then id need one of those.

Anyone know of anywhere besides level ten or dealer where i can buy a reman/rebuilt trans? im not baller enough to buy a level ten, other wise i would. pondered the whole 5/6mt conversion, but i have a subaru for shifting.

teh Q is so pimp i dont want to shift. haha

thanks guys!

I've got a 94Q45 in Sacramento that I'm sending to a junkyard as early as Friday. Not sure if the 90-93 and 94-95 trannies are interchangeable, but...It has an excellent transmission, I just don't have the means to remove it. Come and get the car extremely cheap. Tow it away. Email me if interested.

1st and 2nd are geared slightly differently, but they'll bolt up the same.

Be sure to match 94 TCU with 94 AT, first gear start will help make the transmission feel ok.

Such a deal! Free + tow

q45 tech- you really think its worth the risk of replacing one used with another? i do it al the time in teh MT world, but auto i am a wuss about. my Q is my daily, so i do need it to not go down. how much does an AT weigh? im kinda scared at doing it without a lift- never worked on a big heavy car before

Also, i was pondering a random JDM q45 transmission.

How would i tell if a trans was g50 or y33- id have to match the torque convertor right?

I replied to your email but just noticed there's a couple of Q's on Craigslist SF a lot closer than Sacto that might work for you.

First listing is on 5/31 91Q in Palo Alto with a blown engine for $750:http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/car/342235191.html

This one is an engine and transmission in Fremont from a 92Q for $400:http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/342900429.html

You are also more than welcome to show up at my house with a tow truck. Good luck.

For a new OEM remanufactured get one from Joe.

Ultimately it will save you on repetitive labor.

Most likely a used transmission unless from a KNOWN good car is a crap shoot. The installation labor (if you're doing it yourself) will be your only real loss (that and some skin off your knuckles). If you're paying someone to do it, I'd strongly suggest getting a Reman-OEM from Joe. Otherwise, you're almost certain to be swapping the transmission again, whether in a few days, weeks or if your lucky months.

Personally id only buy a used transmission if I could drive it in the car, pull it while it was still warm and swap it into my car...

However the free factor might make it worth the risk..

transmission work needs a lift and special transmission jack or table!!!!!!!!!

It takes an expert 3-4-5 hours [depending on whether he has an ocassional helper for exhaust, driveshaft, stablizing units on/off jack, cores must be put back in transport case................300+ pounds.

We charge $2270 [plus $500 labor] to install a oem remans. This includes swapping over old speed sensor and a new rear main seal [important]!

We require that a new auxillary cooler be installed to maintain 12/12 warranty.

The oem remans often last >100k now with good maintenance.

The proper solution if you plan on keeping car more than 3 years that's less than $1000 added to the $2500 per year normal maintenance and repair cost PRORATED.

Mine has lasted 6 years [next month] and 100k now so that's only $500 per year extra.

Other than AC compressors and some KS and hoses and shocks and steering rack boots.....................nothing has failed since my [2002] 235k major overhaul..............that's 80,000 miles.

word.

thanks for the info tech-

I'm quite familiar with what is involved in used jdm parts being a crapshoot- hell, my other car is an american shell with every single nut and bolt being random JDM or aftermarket - right hand drive conversion full Sti-RA V-limited with JDM climate control and AC.

Just wondering (since i dont know crap about auto boxes) if there were any strange factors about jdm G50 auto trans that would make it un-desirable, or more of a grab bag than a random usdm auto trans.

I do have a jdm trans lined up from my normal suppplier for dirt cheap, and my friends shop will pop it in at discount labor rate. Should be ok, as the total gamble will only be $500. probably worth it even if it only lasts 6 months. I can afford to do 2-3 without that much pain as the gamb|ing odds are reasonably good.

Thanks guys for the knowledge, Does anyone know if Y33 in jdm land also came with vh45 or did they have 41 like usdm? I'm trying to figure out if the trans ill be putting in has 1 gear start, as i have the trans and the converter and will be putting them both in

1st gear start is controlled by TCU.

I was wrong about $500 labor, it is now $600 [I was thinking of 7 x $70] be we have increase labor to $85 now.

An expert who swaps Q trannies weekly can still do it in 5 hours with ocassional help. A regular technican who doesn't change trannies weekly needs 9 manhours of book labor.

The new transmission must be removed from plastic transport case place on jack, the old transmission must be removed from jack and into case and loaded off and on the supplier pickup................all this adds an hour for an extra person.

Same with dropping exhaust and driveshaft 2 people required thus the extra 2 manhours.

You must have special 3-4 foot long extenstions to get to top bolts even with exhaust and drive shaft removed.

Aha! A guy CAN learn something new every day.

Touge (峠, tōge) is a Japanese word literally meaning "pass." It refers to a mountain pass or any of the narrow, winding roads that can be found in and around the mountains of Japan and other geographically similar areas.

Placing a series of turns or bends in the steep roads that provide access to and from the high elevations of the mountains was intended to be a safety measure, usually to prevent commuters from reaching unstable speeds or creating excessive wear on the vehicles associated with them. It is therefore ironic that these same passes have become popular with street racers and motorsport enthusiasts in the last two decades, providing a dangerous and therefore challenging course where nightly competitions are not unheard of.
