Well, they should be able to have it cut by the VIN # and not need your key, but I didn't know they cut "inexpensive" ebay keys.

I have an "inexpensive" key, I had cut at a real locksmith. Check your local Yellow Pages for a locksmith with laser key-cutting capabilities.

I had to go back a couple times as they laser guy was out getting recertified and then went on vacation. It is somewhat of a specialty.

Hmmm ... I had a couple of extra copies made by a simple key maker at some mall locally without difficulty. Many of them can now do the reverse key copies.

The dealer should be able to use the VIN or key number (came on a tag with the original car sale - in a very neat little oval box!)

Ebay keys are not for everyday use ( there is a reason why they are less expensive than OEM).

My wife picked up one of those cheapie Q Keys and we had it cut at the local locksmith. Works just fine and we've been using it for years. Just looks LAME!

Wow. I have Ebay cheapies that I use everyday in my Q. I don't wanna use the titanium one all the time. Plus it's longer than the copy. Had to have a locksmith cutmine. $25 each key. Ouch. Dealer wanted $150 for a key. No thanks.

The key's not the issue as much as what it leaves inside the tumbler. If you use it all the time, you'll slowly notice the key not going in/out of the tumbler as easily and the key placement withint the tumbler becomes more important in the turning of the key.

Rex gets the Bingo award. Two, three years, you are OK. Later, when you have to replace your locksets, you will wish you had used an OEM blank without extra keys hanging off the ring.

Also, to add to the madness, a new lock set is about $1000 installed.....

So, the long term smart money is on buying a key from Joe, but a "cheapo/ebay" key is okay for limited use as a spare.
