I got a chipped key for my Versa cut and programmed at Ace Hardware recently and it cost $70 and works fine. I'd previously tried at Walmart with their $60 key but it wouldn't start my car, so I returned it right away with no hassle. I'm not sure the guy in the auto department knew exactly what he was doing with the programming box, though, because it had said that it should have been able to program my key ok.
You can get a non-chipped key cut cheaply to hide under the car in case you get locked out or lose your key somewhere, but it won't start the vehicle, although you could hide a spare chipped key somewhere inside the car to use then. No sense keeping a $$$ key under the car in case it came off somewhere!
I bought a remote fob on Ebay for $12 and it came with programming instructions, which were pretty easy to follow. Mainly it involved putting the key in and out of the ignition so many times and then hitting a button on the remote to program it.
