the local car shops dont carry them, and on ebay they either have rediculous prices or rediculous shipping or both.

Any ideas?

Why not just glue a magnet to the bottom of your oil pain? When you want to flush out the metal just pop it off with a screwdriver and flush away.

uhh yea... I wonder what will happen when the magnet falls off because of the high heat and gets crushed into many pieces...

on another note, anyone heard of the magnetic pads that wraps around the oil filter? I think those are more effective because the magnet covers more area unlike the plug which is a small piece. Another plus is when you change the filter, you throw away the filter with all the metal particles all in one toss.

if the magnet falls out, i doubt the pickup would pick it up

Why don't you just super-electro-magnetize the drain plug???? I don't know how long that would last, but if you hooked it up again every time you changed the oil I think it'd do a pretty sufficient job.

It'd have to be a strong magnet.

Just electro-magnetize the drain plug, like you can do any metal with a simple battery. Making a strong magnet isn't difficult.

I remember this topic was discussed in detail on maxima.org...

and this website came to mind:

http://superplug.com/home.php

or you can go to gaussboys.com and pick up some small neodynium magnets and epoxy them to the top of the drain plug.
