I took apart my spare 1991 Q45 A/C compressor for free (Borrowing tools from Auto Zone). What the service manual neglects to mention is that their is a snap ring that holds the magnetic coil in place as well. The compressor I took apart spinned freely but the oil was black that was coming out, It had been sitting for many years.

I have a 609 licence but I do not know of any place that sells or even services CFC-R12 bearing vehicles.

You guys want pictures?

HC12A is probably what you'll be stuck with. Virgin R-12 Is INCREDIBLY expensive, and very difficult to find as well...

What if I could get it from Japan? According to the 609 licence book all junk yards are required to remove the refrigerant from all vehicles. So that means I could buy if from a junk yard.

Well tried to put the compressor back together today but the large rubber o-ring expanded because of the oil. So I need to find a place that sells large rubber (or better) o-rings.

Other than that the pistons were hard to put back into the cylinder block. I would say this is a pretty easy job if the replacement internals were easily available.

I have used Freeze-12 on my old BMW and it worked good.. It worked well in my case, I suspected my system was low on refrigerant, so I got some of that freeze 12 stuff and it worked pretty good. The AC would be cool (not cold) at idle, but when you got moving and got a little air flowing past the condenser it worked pretty good.

For the cost of the stuff and ease of use, it certainly beats not having AC at all. It certainly does not work as good as R12 or R134 in my opinion.. If I ever had to open the system on an R12 system, i'd just refill with R134a.. The freeze 12 like I said works good for topping off.
