My 3 year old son wanted to hear some Green Day today while riding home and I didn't have my iPod with me. I thought, wait a minute, I think it's still in the CD changer that I haven't touched for several months now. Well, it won't do anything. I got out and tried to eject the cartridge and it won't budge either. No power at all anywhere to the changer or control pad. The stereo works fine though. I'm thinking that a big rain storm we had several weeks ago and I left the sunroof vented must have shorted the control pad. The interior was pretty soaked. I just can't find the fuse to the changer for it anywhere. Any ideas? Does it go to the panel or is it an inline fuse somewhere?

Thanks much, Bobs

Just unplug it with the power off, then replug it to reset it.

If that fails, then time to dismount it and disassemble it.j

Yeah, I researched and tried the unplug deal several times and no go...Guess I'll have to take it apart. Is there a reset button inside? or a fuse? I just thought there would be an inline fuse or it would run through the fuse block somewhere...thanks for the info...

No, but I have (may have posted) some pictures. I can email them.

Call if you need to.

Found it...there's a small 15 amp fuse just inside where the power plug is. Just need to make a quick trip to get a fuse and hopefully everything will work fine. Thanks again.

Darn it...Well, I got the fuse in there, everything back together, and reinstalled. When I press the play button on the CD control the radio shuts off and the LCD on the control appears to be operating the changer. However, no sound at all. I've unplugged and plugged it back in but still no sound. Is there another fuse for the modulator or do I need to reset it or something? The changer appears to be working fine, just no sound to the stereo... What next?

You've got me. I guess you can check deck's output.

...Just my luck. I double checked the leads to the changer, disconnected, reconnected, turned the key...etc. Still no sound. It appears that there is some sort of signal from the changer. When I crank the volume all the way up I can hear a humming and a slight alternator whine...when I disconnect the changer lead to the head unit (not the power nor remote lead), the sound goes completely silent. I'm thinking that maybe there is a slight possibility that something may have come unplugged inside the unit when I replaced the fuse. I'll pull it back apart as soon as things dry out from week #4 of heavy rains.

I'm just convinced that the changer is working properly now with the replaced fuse...I can fast forward and skip to next songs, just no sound. Unless, something actually fried. I am completely stumped without knowing how the head unit and the modulator works. Is the modulator inside the stereo or somewhere else then leads to the unit? Do I need to or can I set an FM channel on the modulator? Is there some type of reset sequence? Is there a separate fuse for the modulator? Should I post this for the Infiniti Mechanic?

Sorry, Just confused as usual...Robert

I've got the later deck, and the plug to the externally mounted control unit is unitary. Wish I could help more.

Typical luck...pulled it out and opened it up again. Yep, found some burned in half transistors. I was thinking for a second to try and track down the parts and resolder them in there. But I'm almost sure that would be a waste of time. Guess, I'll look at the Infiniti parts page for a replacement. Did I read somewhere that a clarion changer will also work with the set up?

Get thee to an electronics geek and decode the transistors and replace them with the best grade you can obtain. Same for capacitors and resistors if you wnat to be super safe.

Actually, I started out as an Electrical Engineering major in college before I chose to go the Criminal Justice route (big mistake) so I've got a pretty extensive electronics background in fixing pretty much anything that has power. If I can just figure out the specs on the fried part, I could easily replace it. And that's the problem. It's a small black rectangular transistor just along the top inside edge of the rear board. It sits a couple inches from the right just at the few large capacitors. Anyway, this one is burnt in half and the markings are unreadable. I took some pics for the heck of it. I may try what you said though and see if someone can look at it or possibly Sony can give me some info. There was another that I thought was bad but I think it's just discolored and not overheated. In the mean time, I've got postings on the Parts Wanted page and also CraigsList San Antonio. Therefore, if anyone has another 10 disc changer, I'm in the market. Let me know. Anyway, thanks for trying...

Well, the later ones may be somewhat different form the earlier ones, but send me a picture and I can take one of mine or tell you the code.

That would be great. I don't want you to have to pull one out a car and take it apart tho. I'll try and send or post the pics when I get home this afternoon.

Desolder it and take to an electronics supply estab. They can usually tell. Make sure to use heat syncs when reinstalling.

Here's a few pics of the burned areas. The one on the left is actually burnt in half and I can't read a thing. The one one on the right is discolored from heat but appears Ok. I may replace it if I can find it though:

Having a bit of a problem uploading pics...lemme try again...

Darn it! Nearly got scammed by a salvage yard in NY. They claimed to have the changer and sent me a link to order it. I got to looking at the site which stated absolutely no refunds. I called them to make sure that I was ordering the correct one since the link said nothing about the changer. Well, they told me that Infiniti didn't put changers or Cds for that matter in anything until '94...Hmmm It appears that they were going to sell me another head unit...whatever...

Anyway, I'm still looking for this changer, a close match or maybe get this one fixed. Any info please let me know.

Thanks much, Robert

They are correct. The changer was a dealer installed item before 1994.

I'll try to tear mine apart to caompare. Din't Rex have one of the correct vintage?
