I'm trying to figure out where the in cabin temp sensor for the climate control is. When I push the "AMB" (in cabin ambient temperature) button, where does that get it's info? It looks like there is a sensor on the dash just right of center, is that it?

The in car sensor is along the dash, just right of the ignition area. It looks like a small micrphone screen thing.

The "AMB" button is for the outside ambient temperature though...

No kidding? I thought that was for the interior, that was why I was concerned about it because it always read so damn hot (South Texas). It looks like my sensor is missing, or atleast the screen fell off.

Define way off vs a similar electronic thermometer in front of condenser as shown in FSM.

Because radio stations read in grassy shade vs road heat from vehicle in front and ashaplt.

The ambient is usually 5-7F hotter than you think even when moving 60 mph.

In summer traffic it can be 10-20F higher.

The news said it was around 100*, I was on the freeway, not in traffic and the ambient showed as 80*. My AC is not blowing as cold as it should. The system was rebuilt two weeks before I got the car, new compressor, new condensor, and dryer to the tune of 1900.

I am going to run HVAC diagnostics. It has 120k, so there is good chance I have a problem with the heater mix door, I am also sure that the evaporator has crap in it so I am going to try the cleaning method decribed on q45.org. Just wondering what the if the ambient temp sensor being off would make the system not work as hard becuase it thinks its cooler then it is? If so I want to replace it, if not its lower priority then the other stuff

The sensor like all temp sensors is just a thermistor [variable resistor] tiewrapped just below the hood latch [HA-60. in FSM].

80F ~~2,000 ohms and 100F ~~ 1400 ohms from chart [HA-102]

Thanks,

Looking at the FSM it says the AC Amp takes in the ambient air temp. So if its 20* off this may be part of my problem

There is the imaginary behind the imaginary grill sensor [AMB], then an intake air sensor, and a seperate aspirated cabin temperature sensor.

Intake air is normally 4-5F hotter than air hitting the windshield because of heat flow from engine into plastic HVAC paths and the heat generated from the HVAC fan motor and speed controller.

An interesting test is to use an electronic sensor and see the heat gain from outside [say flopping out the window] and the center vents.............ac and heat off set at 65F on a hot day/economy.

Sometimes on the highway at 60 mph this is 7-8F hotter than real outside air.

So to maintain 72F inside with closed windows it must be 66-65-64F outside without AC.
