Thats how you fill it, through the shifter hole. I'm not positive one how you tell when it's full.

When I replaced my clutch, I just looked up how much it held and put that much in. Then just made sure it looked correct and shifted fine.

The fill plug is on the drivers side about mid transmision. To fill from underneath car you need to attach a hose to the bottle of oil and squeeze it in. Or pull the plug and fill through the shifter until it starts coming out the fill plug.

follow set 240's instructions. There is a device my dad had that i uaed that is like a thing for icing a cake. It sucks the fluid and pushes it out. Be warned though, gear oil smells bad as hell.

Either one will work, but heavier-weight oils are better if you have an older transmission / worn syncros.

Hope you have air tools to take that fill plug out with, or a way to get the car up high enough so you can fit a breaker bar on the plug. Mine was rusted in there very badly, and only a shop's impact could take it out.

use the shifter hole. you'll need snap ring pliers to get the sfiter outta there. i used 4 qts of gear oil and that did it just fine. good luck

I just went through this ordeal yesterday. I saw that my fill plug was stripped to $hit so my friend had the idea to release the drain plug to kill some of the pressure to make it easier to get the fill plug out. Basically what happened was the fill plug was not coming off ( too stripped) so i had to take out the shifter and pour it in through there. But you dont need to use the needle nose to get it out. At least I didn't. what I did was take all the shifter boots off and the there will be a plate w/ a ball joint in it. Take that plate off it has 6 bolts on it, 4 you can get from inside the car and 2 more right in front of the other for that you have to get by hugging the transmission from underneath. Sorry if it post was too long. Hope this helps a little. -Jeromy

Nope... he was right when he said 5 1/8 pts. The whole crankcase doesn't even hold 4 quarts.

What are snap ring pliers? it rings a bell but doesn't come to mind would regular needle nose pliers work? can you use that same snap ring again? will be doin in a few hours wish me luck.

everything seems to be harder on our cars damn rust.....

I was going to do this myself as well until i got the center console out and looked at the shifter setup, I couldn't figure out what it was I had to do to get the shifter out so I left it.

I too, was told 4 qts on this forum, and was indicated by NAPA that that is what the transmission should hold. (actually its a hair less than 4 qts)

EDIT: on the bottles of gear oil I have, they have a pointy tip of a spout. when I had the console out I noticed that there were a couple of small holes that appeared to go right into the transmission without removing the shifter......but I never tried it. But I figured the lil pointy spout would fit right in there....

yea, you can fill it through those tiny holes without actually taking the shifter out, but it takes a long time and I wouldn't risk spilling gear oil in my interior cuz the smell will never go away. I filled mine through the fill plug using a hose, ( I personally don't like the fill through the shifter thing, cuz I figure if you gotta jack up the car to drain it, why not just fill it there too?) then you can just stick your finger in the hole to see if its full. I think it takes just under 3 qts if I remember right

WTF!!! this is messed up looked at it today and guess what? couldn't even get the damn drain plug off aaaaaaahhhhh 1)THAT plug is messed up a lil, so when i put in the 1/2 ratchet in its real loose and 2)its tight as hell.

but even before i tried to drain it look into that shifter thingy. took off the bracket then the rubber boot and then tried to get that snap ring off no luck. so i tried "Zero-S13"'s way but them two nuts that u gotta hug the transmission to do, was not gonna work for me. then went to buy a vacuum pump to pump the oil in and found out i couldn't get the plug out.

anyway i'm goin to the nissan dealer when i have time to get a new drain plug, return the vacuum pump and get a shop to air gun that ****** out. damn all this just to change the damn transmission oil. i didn't even have to get under the car on my honda.

oh and to clear up that 4qts/3qts bs ... ITS 5 and 1/8 PINTS !!!2pints a quart so 4qts = 8pints thats way too much and 3=6pints. its in the FSM thanks for all the help anyway.

5 1/8 pts. is right. Straight out of Chilton's.

Whoever told that one guy that 4 qts. is the right about was way wrong. The damn crankcase doesn't even hold that much!

Sorry to hear the trouble about getting the plugs out.

You can probably go to a local lube shop and have them pull the plugs and fill the transmission with your oil really cheap.

They know how to get them out they do it all the time. Just wouldn't trust the oil they use.

On an M/T, you fill through the shifter. Take the shifter out andfill.

For the differential, there are two holes; a drain hole at thebottom and a fill hole on the side (driver side). You'll need a tube/hose to pump the fluid in.

Can someone in very simple terms/steps indicate how to remove the shifter with just the needle nose pliers?

I would really like to do this on my 240 this weekend. I can get the console out in seconds, I'm confused where to go with this snap ring business, where do I start....where do I look?

thnx,

Removing the shifter is a piece of cake with the right tools. First, twist off the shift knob. Then pull up the black trim going around the shifter all the way up to the vents, and the leather boot should come with it. Removing the two dust boots below that, there should be 4 12mm (IIRC) screws. After that, pull the black rubber thing up just enough to see beneath it. Then you come to the C ring - a good pair of C-ring pliers should remove it. You might have luck with a good pair of needle-nose, but it's a LOT harder. Best to go buy the pliers, they're like 5 bucks at any car parts place. After you pull that ring, the shifter should pull straight out.

I don't think it matters what size... some of the ends on them are too big to fit into the two holes, but most of them come with different end pieces and most of them will fit.

Gah, I went and picked up the transmission fluid from my gf's garage that I had bought after researching here how much I needed at the beginning of this year. I have 3 one liter bottles and theres about 2 pints in a liter.

Which means I bought those because I needed 5 and a bit.

Sorry for adding any confusion. :)
