You have to understand first the engine-exhaust layout so as not to confuse one sensor from the other. In the 96 I30 with Federal Emission configuration, there are 3 Oxygen sensors - 2 FRONT and 1 REAR. The VQ engine with transverse mounting places Bank 1 (for cylinders 1-3-5) closer to the firewall while Bank 2 (cylinders 2-4-6) closer to the radiator. In general, the FRONT O2 sensor refers to mounting before (upstream) of the catalytic converter while the REAR refers to mounting after (downstream) of the 'cat.'
Front Right O 2 Sensor (B1S1) - as the name implies, is mounted on the Bank 1 vertical pipe, right-hand side. This is what you need, NGK P/N:24525.
Front Left O 2 Sensor (B2S1) - is mounted on the Bank 2 vertical pipe, left-hand side. The part number is the same as the front right.
Rear O2 sensor - this is mounted just after the cat, NGK P/N: 24630
To further clarify it, once you are SAFELY under the car, the front exhaust pipe is for Bank 2 and the 2nd exhaust pipe is for Bank 1.
I normally go to NGK.com a.k.a sparkplugs.com for OEM and quality O2 sensors. The NGK 24525 is priced at $68. At Amazon.com. they are currently selling this NGK/NTK sensor for $58 with free shipping - a bargain for quality O2 sensor.
If you know how to splice wires (and read schematic diagram), you can buy universal O 2 sensor for $25-50. O2 sensors from NGK/NTK, Denso and Bosch are reliable. Please avoid the cheap ones from eBay.
An O2 sensor adapter, @ $10, may come in handy, as well as PB Blaster/WD-40.
