Hey guys I just found out that my audio installer wants to charge me $250 to bypass the factory amp and install some 6 3/4" speakers in my 01 QX4. I can do this on my own if I can find the amp, does anyone know its location? it will makes the discovery process a lot quicker if you do.

Thanks

Billy

In the cargo area behind the left rear quarter panel.

Thanks bmlawless, I left my service repair manual disk at work. I'm guessing that it's only the rear speakers that run through a factory amp and the fronts go through the factory head unit. If you can confirm this that would be great. I'm getting some hiss out of my new stereo and trying to narrow down if it's coming out of the head unit or if there is an amp that doing it. I need to put in a new amp regardless and hopefully this will eliminate the problem.

Thanks!

Billy

Sorry I didn't get to you yesterday, but you are correct. The front speakers come directly off the head unit.

That might not be true

you have a 2001 Qx4, I believe your front doors have amps in them.i have an 01 pathfinder and the two front doors have there own amp in them for that door speaker and the pillar tweeter. you might want to make sure.

Thanks Roger, I'm getting some hissing out of a new nav head unit that was put in and I figured that the signal was processing through and amp in the fronts. But my repair service manual doens't say anything about a front speaker amp. I have new JL Audio components setup in the front but the guy that wired them was was super super lazy and did a really crappy job. I don't know if he bypassed the amp(if there is one) or not. I doubt he did and I'm figuring that this is the root of my problem. Can you explain exactly where the amps are located?

I was able to disconnect(easier than removing) the rear speaker amp which was really simple. Now I just have to rewire my entire car, yay!

The front amps are connected to the speakers. They come out as one piece.

Oops, I think you're right on two amps for the newer rigs. The amp is in the passenger front door.

This is one of the reasons why I'm not into bose, their power distribution and crossover technology is really lame IMO. So does that mean that if the front speakers were replaced that the amps had to be taken out as well? If you can't tell I'm trying to avoid pulling the door panel off but I've got a feeling that that will happen regardless. I'm sure they have proprietary connectors on them that would make hooking up another speaker to them difficult.

the amps are located right beside the speakers, the speaker wires that run to the amp from the head unit should be there and already ran for you just cut them off the connector and extend if necessary. just cover the other wires.

you might not need to take the whole door panel off i used a screwdriver and popped the bottom clips off enough to access it (this is not recommended its just what i did).

and if there is a hissing make sure all the grounds are solid grounds. if the spot looks painted a little sand it. and its always better to use different locations for grounds.

anyway i hope that solves your problem

I know this is prob to late.. Never use the factory gnd wire in the radio harness. Very weak..Run a separate gnd from the decks harness or ground the radios chassiss to (bare metal) the vehicle's chassis. ^
