Where is check engine light?

Ok this may sound really stupid, but I just want to make sure I am not going crazy.

I went to get my '90 240sx smogged here in California.

Even with my K&N filter and headers it passed smog. The one thing that the guy said he needed before I got the certificate was he needed to see that the check engine light would come on when I first turned the key.

Under the hood it says it is a california made/imported car and the books show that it should have a check engine light. Fore the life of me I can't find it.

On the bottom left side of the intrument cluster there are 5 lights, three are marked (Low fuel, low wiper fluid, and cruise) the other 2 are not marked.

I tried taking the cluster to the dealership today, but that was use less.All they could tell me is what I already knew.

It is an analog cluster and No HUD, although I think I found and extra plug on the wiring harness that is ment to connect to a HUD if I had one.

Will try and post a picture soon of my cluster. Hopefully the previous owner did not switch to a cluster with no CHECK Engine light.

It has a check engine light, and in fact it should be an engine shaped red light when the car is in ACC

mine doesn't have one either and mines a 89

The s13 cel is not labeled. It is one of the unmarked ones you spoke of. I forget which one it is (I'd go look if it weren't raining) but it's the one that comes on when you turn the key to "on" before starting the car.

I have a 90 and it doesnt have a CEL either. Nor does any light come on in one of the blank spots on the left of the cluster.

Yo, just to clear things up for all of you with 89-90 SOHC KA 240sx.... these models in California did not come with a check engine light. It is not a necessary part of SMOG here in CA for 89-90 Nissans, any make or model, to have one. Thus, Nissan in CA saved money and used the less-sophistocated gauge cluster that doesn't have a CEL. So stop looking! There isn't one =) It was only in 91+ models that they started incorporating a CEL.

Interesting. It's only in California that they don't have them? Both of my 90's have it so naturally that post was a surprise...

My 240 is not a CA model.... so calm down newcastle. none of the s-13's ive seen have CEL around here> St.Louis, MO which is about 5-6 of um.

Does anyone else have an 89-90 with a cel?

All of the '89-90's Ive ever seen dont have the CEL, my 91 does however.

I have a CEL and i have a 90. The light is yellow and it turns on when u switch the key to II. Its on bottom left light cluster. And it should be the very last one on the right.

oh yea... and the CEL should be labeled too. It should have the shape of an engine with the words "Check" in the middle of it.
