I need to find a place I can bring wires from the fuse box under the hood into the cabin. Purpose is to install an LED which turns on when headlight is on. I looked at the hood release cable and it is not easy to find where it goes under the hood.

Or, someone can recommend a way without wires passing through the firewall. I checked fuses below the steering wheel. None of them has anything to do with headlight.

There are two ways i know of,

If you have an Auto, there is whats called a clutch delete plate, right next to where the brake pedal mounts, drill a hole, put a gromit in and you're done.

The other option, is for if you have a manual, which was my case.

This was my thread i made when i was a noob, check in there for pictures on how to do both options.

There's a plate here secured by 12mm nuts on automatic transmission equipped R50s:

Drill a hole, put a rubber grommet around the hole, and pass wires through. Easy.

Thank you both for the quick reply. I didn't expect any reply that quickly.
Yes, I saw that dimond shaped piece held by 12 mm nuts. I couldn't quite relate that to the cabin side. Mine is auto. What is this piece for originally? Do I need to drill through the metal?

It's just a cover where the clutch pedal would enter on a manual R50. The plate is right behind the transmission control module in the driver's side left hand side footwell, this picture might help visualize:

You'll need to remove the plate and drill a reasonably sized hole through the metal, and add a rubber grommet to prevent wires from getting damaged by the rough metal.

I was afraid of drilling the metal and getting exposed metal rusted. It is probably not an issue at all. Maybe a bit of touchup paint around the drilled holes then a rubber grommet.

I need this headlight indicator LED. Sometimes it is difficult to tell whether my headlight is on or not, depending on the street lights. My very first ticket over 20 years driving was because I didn't turn on headlight...

Doesn't your QX4 have an automatic headlight setting? Can't you just leave it at that and the vehicle should control the headlights for you?

If you'd still like the headlight status LED, perhaps you can get the headlight status via the combination stalk instead. See EL-29 of the factory service manual for a wiring pinout and diagram.

Ah, how come I didn't think of the combination switch. That should be the easiest way.
Yes, I do have auto headlight setting.

Thank you again. I am glad I asked questions here and received great answers.

You're quite welcome. Good luck with the mod, and if it isn't too much trouble, post some pictures and details once you're done so other owners can do the mod if they desire. :)

I will. Now I need to decide what LED to buy and where to place it.
I never attached pictures here so need to learn how. Is it in FAQ?

I am sorry I don't see a "link" button or the like. I have some pictures on imfur.com ready to be linked here and explain what I did.

Unscrewed the combination switch
Image
Thick black wire is ground, red wire is 12V/0V when headlight is on/off.
Image
Soldered black and red wire extension wires, not perfect.

I bought one tri-color 5mm LED at Fry's, red, green and amber (both red and green on).
Haven't decided where to mount it.

Why work and solder so close to the connector?? Give your self some room and do it a few inches down the harness, good practice. I could also see if your soldering that close to the pins, a potential of solder running into the connector and shorting s*** out

Because to me it's the easiest spot. Will not short anything after I expoxy (or the like) cover them. If I worry, it's the solder bridge between the two, not the solder going into the pins. I have been doing things like this in a lazy but reliable way.

Perhaps consider using T-taps in the future:

It looks like a good T tap with a looking sleeve. Long time ago I used a T tap with no sleeve so it opened by itself after a while. I ended up soldering the wires.

Below is the picture showing a backup warning device I installed in front of the speedometer and tacometer.
Image
I opened the back up warning device cover, drilled a hole for this green LED on the PCB where there are no other components. The LED hole is at the right most end, next to the letter R.

One thing I found with my wiring is that when I turn on high beam, this green LED turns off. Therefore, it is not an ideal wiring but I am ok with it now.

There is a separate high beam indicator, so in my opinion it's no big deal that your low beam indicator isn't lit when the high beams are on.

Clean looking install, nice work! Thanks for sharing your set up.
