so...I was tearing down the SR i bought, and had a friend help. We were making good progress and spent a little time noticing all the differences between the KA and SR as we dissassebled the motor.(together weve built 4 KAs)....Anyway while taking out the cams, i pressed on the rocker(I dont know why i just did) and the little notched piece that sits on top of the valve assembly went tumbling down into the head. Well now weve finished dissasembling the rest of the motor and I CANNNOT find where that little bastard went. I cant see it in the head anywhere. Im about to drop everthing off at the machine shop and cant shake the feeling that when i go to reassemble everything that little bastard is gonna cause havok. It was on the exhaust side of cylinder #3...any likely spots that i might have missed?

That is called a guide. The flat piece that sits on the right valve is called a shim.

I really hope you marked where all these guides and shims came from because if you didnt, you are going to have to spend lots of time when you are putting things together to make sure that they are shimmed properly.

All stock guides are 3mm but shims are varying sizes so that the difference in height between the guide and the shim when sitting on the valves is less than .001". Now if you mix them up this clearance will no longer be .001 or less.

Good luck.

oh, i didnt take anythhing else apart...after the guide fell off, i was very careful to remove the rest of the rockers and make sure the were all labled and what not. I didnt disassemble the head any further, but i am having it checked against spec and rebuilt if nessecary. I was just wondering if anyone else had ever lost one of the guides, and found it later in a weird place...

well, I actually did lose one of my shims that way. I was putting it on the valves on #4 cylinder and dropped it in the back of the motor... That sucked.

I decided to run the motor that way. Few thousand miles later, I had to rebuild due to spun bearings but not because of the shim. When I took my upper oil pan off, it was sitting there haha.

If you dropped it in the motor and it did not go in the combustion chamber I bet its sitting in your oil pan either upper or lower.
