Greetings! I recently bought a running 86 Nissan 720 Reg Cab Base Model, Z24 with 197K, 5 sp MT 2WD. Drove it home. Tested the A/C and I hear the compressor kick in but of course - no cold air. It has never been converted from R12. I have failed to identify the Low and High pressure access ports. Where could they be? Any help would be appreciated.

My factory service manual should arrive in the mail soon, but this really has me stumped!

you mean into the cabin?

The huge black hose is for the A/C. follow it to the fire wall. On my other truck its just capped with a rubber plug. The condenser is on a bracket on the lower driver's side.

OK, I found the ports! Really weird! I will post photos tomorrow. Plus other news, photos of my truck and a few plans I have for getting her running top notch.

So here is the photo I promised. I looked everywhere and finally found the ports sticking out of the firewall end of the compressor. Weird. I have never seen a setup that way. Usually you find them on the lines somewhere near the firewall.

This photo was taken looking through the driver's side wheel well.

Anyone on this forum ever perform a retrofit and convert to 134A? Advice would be welcome.

The 1st thing to do is find out if you stock compressor is 134a compliant. Alot of older comps. cant run the new refridgerants. You can take it in to an A/C shop and have it checked out.
There is a company called Ready Air that makes retrofit kits for older compressors. If your's will work then u can get a retrofit kit @ your local NAPA or other parts houses.
IMO... R12 is just fine as long as your system is up to par and filled properly.

Great advice. I might have a source for some R12. I'll update later. Thanks

careful "sourcing" R12... Unless ur carrying an EPA card it could be a $25,000.00 fine. I took all the courses and tests to get certified and signed the promiss to not vent it into the air and all that B.S. Look around for a ma-n-pop style a/c service shop, they will usually evac ur system for cheap to nothing.

More good advice. My neighbor is a British car mechanic and asked if I needed any R12. Had some laying around his garage and he knows I have a 66 Ford Galaxie that I restored. I did not need it for the Galaxie but now that I have the 720, I thought I could use it.

Do you know if my compressor is 134A compatible? The ports are on the back side of the compressor itself, which I have never seen before. My 720 is a early production 1986 base model 2WD 2.4L 5sp MT carb'd Z24 motor.

the stock compressor is a NV140S, looks like they use the same 1 for several years... In 94 the D21 came w/ 134a. so you may be able to use the retrofit kit but u'll have to take it in and have it drained and flushed b4 installing the kit.
