Manual says, 'when you need improved engine braking'. Does this mean going down hills? Stop & go traffic?

Can someone clarify?

"Engine braking" is when the engine helps to slow the vehicle, essentially keeping it in lower gears. When driving down a steep grade, many people will just use the (pedal) brake constantly. This could overheat your brakes and cause a potential failure. Setting the overdrive to 'off' in this situation would allow the engine to assist in keeping the vehicle at a steadier (?) speed and allow you to use the (pedal) brake less frequently. {This is similar to truck drivers or 'manual' shifters setting it to a lower gear.}

In the case of stopping at stop signs or such in town... I don't see it being much help.

I hope this helps some, but maybe someone can offer a clearer explaination regarding exactly how this prevents the transmission from changing gears, thus preventing the vehicle from gaining speed quickly as it would with overdrive 'on'...?

That was a terrific explanation, and I appreciate it.

I'd driven a Ford Escape before getting this Murano, and it had a similar button that turned the car into manual transmission, more or less. The guy I was test driving with had me use it going uphill, too. I think it's more 'all purpose' than is the one the Murano has. Fine with me, I just need to know what it is!

Thanks,
K
