"Engine braking" is when the engine helps to slow the vehicle, essentially keeping it in lower gears. When driving down a steep grade, many people will just use the (pedal) brake constantly. This could overheat your brakes and cause a potential failure. Setting the overdrive to 'off' in this situation would allow the engine to assist in keeping the vehicle at a steadier (?) speed and allow you to use the (pedal) brake less frequently. {This is similar to truck drivers or 'manual' shifters setting it to a lower gear.}
In the case of stopping at stop signs or such in town... I don't see it being much help.
I hope this helps some, but maybe someone can offer a clearer explaination regarding exactly how this prevents the transmission from changing gears, thus preventing the vehicle from gaining speed quickly as it would with overdrive 'on'...?
