Shop around. Thats a little too expensive. $100-$170 sounds better.

I change my transmission fluid every 20k but I am very hard on the car. I would not go longer then 30k on the transmission fluid or diff fluid.

im with you...I Got 70K miles on my and never did it....From what I learned is once you hit 40-50K and never changed it then dont bother.I was a Audi lover for a while and had couple of them...I bought one when it had 25K miles and was driving it until 150K and still sold it with good condition. Then I had another one with 20K and I changed the trans fluid ( at the dealer ) at 35K.... 5k miles later transmission died...and I know few peepz with the same experience...

CHECK WITH YOUR NISSAN DEALER !!!

They did my daughter's Max for around $130....This was not a drain & fill either. I would only go to Infiniti if I had to pee really bad and they were closest.

Oh yea people at my dealer give me hell for driving a Infiniti, that is until they ride in it,then they understand

When I first started looking for a new car in late 2005, my first stop was at Honda. Good, then looked at Acura, better, then checked out Infiniti, BEST!

As for changing auto trans fluid. My last vehicle with an automatic transmission was a 1974 Mazda RX4 with a rotory engine. Had over 150k miles after 17 years on it & never changed the transmission fluid.IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T TRY TO FIX IT!

Just my opinion! Oh I forgot, for Fords, change it weekly, Mustangs, change daily

52k I'd probably NOT change it. If you go past 30-40k miles don't service the transmission.

I just had the Infiniti dealership flush and fill my transmission. It cost $140?

Dang guys (you know who you are),

You're giving horrible advice.

The generaly accepted rule is to flush your transmission at regular intervals (owners manual or dealer should be able to tell you). IF you have not flushed or changed the fluid in a long time (beyond the regular interval), then it is best to just drain and fill with new fluid.

Why?

Flushing involves sending a cleaning solution through the transmission to pick up contaminents and get them out of the system. There are two problems with this in a neglected transmission:

1) Little metal bits and debris have usually collected towards the bottom of the transmission.

2) The pressurized liquid is sent in the reverse direction of how the fluid usually travels (it may go in both directions). By doing this, there is a possibility of getting debris stuck in places it doesn't belong.

Here's where the controversy comes in. There have been situations where a normally functioning transmission begins to slip after being flushed/drain & filled. The "cause" is that the transmission was relying on the debris for friction and now that the fluid is relatively clean, the friction is gone.

I believe that only occurs in extreme cases where the transmission is neglected for over 100k miles. *This is my opinion*

One method for "flushing" that sounds interesting is to do multiple drain and fills. This is done in order to remove as much of the old fluid out without actually doing a pressurized flush.

The effectiveness can be found by comparing the total transmission capacity to the amount drained. If the total capacity is 8 qts and the drain yields 5, then one D&F will yield 63% new fluid.

Doing this a second time will get you 86%

Doing it a third time will get you to 95%

i believe full capacity for the G35 automatic is 11 quarts. I'm not sure what it is for the 6MT. When I did a drain and fill, it was a simple gravity drain for about 45 min. This let out only about 5.5 quarts, or half of the auto transmission fluid. For a better gravity drain, you should allow 12-24 hours which should yield around 10 quarts.

I agree...flushes can be problematic if nto done regularly. My BMW transmission went out about 5-10K miles after I flushed the transmission fluid...

Way to bring back a long dead stupid thread.

There are several things very wrong with many of the statements in this thread.

-The G takes J-Matic Nissan fluid ONLY.

-Change the fluid every 60K, It does not matter what your old car used to do when you didn't take care of it. I am honestly surprised by the amount of you guys who neglect your cars.FAIL

-Transmission fluid uses petroleum based oil which has friction modifiers which break down over time and will damage the pump, and friction components.

-Nate is right on this, flushing a transmission (if done properly and regularly) will not damage a transmission that is not already failing. I have seen many transmissions fail but they were in almost all cases failing or poorly maintained before.

I just want to ask if time is an issue? I have a 2005 that was undoubtedly never touched when it comes to fluids but I bought it around 22k. If it is nearly 3 years old now but still not yet at 30k does it matter? Is it the mileage or time that is more imporant with fluids?

It's hard to say what an exact time is, I would wager a guess of five years or so since that is about the average time/mileage. I think that is roughly the standard.

So gettting it at 30k is just fine then since I shouldn't be 5 years old at that point? Sounds like it and I think I'll take it to Nissan dealers this time...wish you were not across the country SteveTheTech

I wish I could help everybody here out, at least I can try to give you the best information I can.

You should be fine just make sure you get J-Matic Nissan fluid only. In my personal experience doing at 30K is above and beyond and most owners just wait till 60K regardless of time.

i was thinking of getting mines changed at 30k... my car has like 23k... so that would be over kill? i brought the car with 18k (its an 05) so i know the car was sitting... i know that all the other fluids have been changed... i can check those... there is no way for me to know the condition of the transmission fluid (it shifts great though!).... so i was just going to do the 30 mile service at the nissan dealership... what would you recommend?

should got to a local shop for the 30 mile service? i let the local shop do my oil changes...
