i've never owned a new car before and i've been reading on various websites different times to change the oil. even different recommendations from friends. some say change it once it reaches a 1000 miles to get all the metal shavings and what not out of the engine. some say just wait till the scheduled oil change date. what do you say?

Oil is the lifeblood of the engine. The initial oil used that the factory uses, helps to have everything mate properly, which will cause some metal to scrape off. The best thing to do is to change the original oil at about 1k, using synthetic, then change again around 2500. After that, every 5k or 6 months are good intervals to stick by.

A good synthetic, like Royal Purple, will do wonders for the car...you don't have to go synthetic, but it's recommended. I use 10W-40 here in Atlanta.

Another thing to do is not rev the engine within the first 1500 miles or so. When on the highway, don't stay at a constant RPM, vary it a little...just don't use the cruise control, and you'll be fine.

Follow these tips and you'll love your engine as much as your car!

I agree. I switched to synthetic after the break in period.

is there such a thing as a break-in period with the newer cars nowadays? cause my dad floored it like within the first 100 miles and i thought to myself...what an idiot hah.

Yeah, you should take it easy the first 1k miles, and change the oil after that. The break in period is especially important if you have a manual due to you breaking in your clutch and shouldnt rev past 3500ish RPM for the first 500 miles atleast.

Nissan points out in owners manual that 3,750/90 days is best if longevity is desired.

Welcome to NICO.

My belief is that one or two very early oil and filter changes is "a good thing to do" - it is cheap insurance for engine longevity. Based on what I have read from some industry sources.

If you do a search for oil posts by me, you will find these posts with what I did.

We usually tell everyone try to change every 3k-3500 miles for new car .. and change the filter every oil change .. helps keep the car running great.

For new cars ive seen people bring it in at 2k miles , im not sure if changing the oil every 2-3k miles would be bad. but keeping the oil for long time will hurt it

Well you picked a great first choice for a new car. My first car was a 1958 Ford and was the biggest piece of **** I ever owned.I'm an old fart driving for over 40 years so here is my advise for what it is worth.I have always changed oil every three to four thousand miles myself. I try to pick nice days, not too hot, not too cold. I use a 3 ton hydraulic jack & ramps

I generally use Pennzoil, Quaker State or whatever I find on sale. If you are going to change oil every 3-4k miles then I feel there is no need for synthetic or any other expensive oil.

I buy oil filters at the dealer 3 to 4 at a time and I get a discount. I keep all receipts as well as a log with dates and mileage when I change oil.

My 2006 Sedan 6sp manual used about 1qt per 1000 miles when new and now with 34k miles I get about 2k miles per quart. From reading these posts some have vehicles using oil & some do not. Check your oil weekly on a level surface after the car has been standing for 20 min or more. The L mark on the dipstick is 2 quarts low. Hope this helps?

^good advice....I change it between 3.5 and 4K with synthetic cause the oil looks dirty then. I have also always changed my own oil (for almost 30 yrs now).

Change the oil to Mobil 1 at 1,000 miles. While the car doesn't NEED to be broken in, it doesn't hurt to avoid full throttle starts or staying at a constant RPM for long periods of time in the first 1,000 miles.
