When replacing a clutch does the clutch plate have to be touching the flywheel?

I started replacing the clutch on my 1990 240sx and I'm not sure if the clutch plate has to be touching the flywheel or how far it should be apart?please respond. i really want to finish it by tomorrow

are you talking about the clutch disc or the pressure plate? its just flywheel, clutch disk (make sure is facing the right way and use an alignment tool) and pressure plate. so the clutch disk is sandwhich between the flywheel and pressure plate. then put the bolts on and torque it on the right specs.

i'm talking about the pressure plate. i know the clutch disk is supposed to be touching the flywheel when you install it but does the pressure plate have to be in contact with the flywheel?
