when does an ignition box become necessary?

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

I found a pretty good deal on a used MSD 6AL ignition box for my KA-T setup, but I dont know if I am really going to need it. I plan on running about 15,16, 17 lbs of boost, hopefully getting about 350 to the wheels on a built block and e-manage.

I've been searching around, and I keep seeing different opinions on when this becomes a necessity. I keep hearing that it is "nice," but nothing about an engine snuffing cause of weak spark. Watcha guys think?

Better spark is always a good mod bro, even for NA applications. You'll start to run into ignition trouble much past 15 psi I'd be willing to bet.

We'll find out soon...I'm not upgrading until I figure out if I am having problems maintaining spark at higher boost. Just give me a month or so, we'll see how it works out :) I'm going to try different plugs, different gaps, new wires etc. before I upgrade though, just to see whats possible. If I do upgrade, it'll have a 2 stage setup :)

Even on mildly boosted motors, a ignition amplifier can help. Closing the gap can only help so much. You tend to make the mixture's exposure to spark smaller so it's more likely to misfire than a broader spark. While using a smaller gap is a good remedy for a spark that blows out, it's more of a bandaid when moderate to high amounts of boost are applied. Misfires do occur normally, even on a NA motor. A Spark amplifier will decrease that event. And since it's more likely to misfire at higher RPM';s and pressure levels, it makes a larger difference on boosted cars. On a NA motor, you probably will never feel the difference, though it may actually help.

I've got a Mallory HyFire 6A (a total MSD 6A clone, right down to the wire colours) and a MSD Blaster SS coil. I added it when I misfiring after about 8 psi with stock gap. I have run 16 or so PSI on stock gap with the new setup and have had no problems. I'm not sure but you will probably need the MSD tach adapter with that CDI box.
