i recently did my first oil change on my 93 240sx. I used 5w-30 valvoline half synthetic blend. i ran it for a while afterwards, and it runs great.

I also changed the oil filter with a k&N model. The K&N model has a connector for a rachet or wrench for easy tightening. I tightened it pretty good, but now im hearing u should only hand tighten it? What will happen if i over tighten it? I doubt im strong enough to rip apart the connector or anything. will flow be hampered by tightening alot?

Never will i have anyone else do the oil for me :) I had too much fun painting my clothes and driveway in messy oil. :D

well the reason you should only hand tighten it is so you can get it back off with your hands, because most dont have that thing were you can use a wrench. and really there is no need to tighten it that much as long as the oil doesnt leak out. as long as you can get it back off it should be ok.

also you dont want to strip out the treads on the oil filter adapter.

i work at a oil change station in keene, new hampshire and according to tha book there (u have to read like 3 before u can even touch anything under a hood) it says that all a oil filter needs to be tightened is 3/4 of a turn AFTER the gasket touches the base plate. i tighten it more then that but thats what the "book" says

i dont over-tighten mine just because its a pain in the a$$ to get off afterwards - i recommend to hand-tighten only but not to the point that you can get it back off with you hand... it should be to the point that you have to get it off with the wrench

yes what Pemdas said.

if you make it too tight, the actual body of the filter will crush in and/or twist off, leaving behind the rest of the filter stuck to the motor (I have seen this happen, it sucks) At this point it is a REAL pain in the arse to get off, so be sure to watch out for that.

Just pay someone to hand tighten your oil filter.
