On July 3rd, my I30 was involved in an accident that caused the airbags to deploy. Tonight I drove the car home from where it was being stored (albeit with a replacement rear axle) and found the seat belts are locked into a fixed position. Is there some mechanism that locks the seat belts if the air bags have been deployed?

Thank you,
Craig

There is a small charge in the tensioner that goes off when the air bag deploys to tighten the belt and locks it in place. You'll need to replace the belts.

Thanks Scott for the information. I found a good set of seat belts on a wrecked 98 I30 that do not have the electric plugs.
The 98 model where I harvested the belts did have the air bags deployed. However, the belts are not locked like the ones on the 99 I30. When I removed the belts, I found the seat belts in the 98 model were not plugged to the electrical wire. So that explains why the belts ini the 98 model were still working after the wreck.

Does anyone know if there is a SRS sensor or seat belt light that will not go off if I use the belts that do not have the electrical plugs?

If I need to drop a resistor into the electrical plugs to shut off some sensor that is looking for a particular Ohm resistance, then I can do that.. It looks like Maxima/I30 introduced the (charged seatbelts) at some point before 1998. The car I pulled the seat belts from must have been in an earlier accident that destroyed the original belts.
