Anyone ever done this/had it done?

Basically you cut your wheel in half lenghtwise and add a piece and weld it back together, to go from say a 7" wide wheel to an 8" wide wheel.

How safe/easy/costly is this? I like the rota subzero wheels, but don't want 17" but also don't want the width of the 16" wheels (7"), so I remembered reading about this when I was researching a trans-am. I would probably make them 8" wheels in the back and keep 7 in the front. Anyone ever had this done?

The only problem woul dbe the offset I suppose, because it only gets worse as you widen a +40mm offset wheel...

Here's a link to the trans-am doing it. He went from 9" to 11" for $225/wheel. I suppose it would be cheaper on the Rotas because you are only adding 1/2 the width. (1" vs. 2")

Opinions?

Yeah it seems like it would compromise the integrity of the wheel.

yes. the introduction of the heat effective zone near the weld boundaries reworks the metal grain structure, compromising the strength.
