How necessary are they? Just wondering because i put some different tires on my versa the other day and the guys at the shop totally snagged my weights. I called them out on it and they gave them back to me BUT i was dumb and didn't notice they gave me different weights. I am curious to know how necessary they are, i only changed 2 tires and on the outside part of the rim the weights are missing but on the inside of the rim line the weights are there. just curious to know because the other 2 wheels have different assort of weights on them inside and out. thanks!

Weights are there to balance the wheel. It help to correct wheels which aren't ''round'' so more because maybe you hit a pot hole or whatever with them. On the other hand, sometimes, when you buy cheap tires such as chinesse crap, you'll need them, the tires may have imperfection which had weights to some spot on them, enough to need have weights on the wheel. Without them, you'll get the feeling the car shack at specific speeds and the ride get totally annoying. The weights can be sticks inside the wheels or you can have some which are like holding like a hook on the inside lip.

They merely moved the weights to where they were needed to balance the tire. After you left they probably laughed so hard they puked.

Don't worry about the weights not being in the same spot they used to be in. This new set of tires balances differently. Every set will. They're supposed to have moved them; I'd be concerned if they DIDN'T move them. As long as you don't encounter any vibration while driving, they've done their job correctly.

It has nothing to do with roundness. It's just there to counter the imbalances that normal manufacturing processes create. Even a brand new perfect set of wheels will need weights, especially once fitted with tires. ANY tire, not just "cheap chinese crap" will have weight imperfections. Just the way things work.

Even $900+ a piece BBS rims forged in Germany require wheel weights. No matter how high-tech the manufacturing process or price, both wheels and tires can't possibly be made to have perfect rotational balance. Even the slightest offset will result in significant vibration with rotation.
