There is no "all around everything", no....just no.
What brakes are we trying to clear? Are we trying to grip or slide? There are so many variables.
I mean, if you're really serious about wheels, you buy Technomagnesio Rally wheels.
They're 17", cost $3700/set, and weigh THREE KILOS EACH.
They're also only available in orders greater than 24 wheels, custom from Technomagnesio, for purposes of outfitting a rally team.
Talking about "the best", or "all around" is pointless, because there's always something that's just leagues better and more expensive, but not something any of us would ever own.
Point taken; this IS subjective, but at the same time it creates a meaningful discussion. Sure, talking about "the best all around" is ultimately pointless, because in all actuality, it simply does not exist. Fact is, people have been arguing like this since Plato. (For those in the know, consider The Republic, Book X.) Regardless, the information generated out of this question IS NOT pointless. There ARE rim/wheel setups that ARE more versatile, period.
You wouldn't throw on a set of Hoosiers slicks if you were driving through the Rocky Mountains, just like you wouldn't take your snow tires to the drag strip.
It's common sense, right? Still, we're making a 1:1 comparison. Now, what if you needed your tires to last you a long time on rough roads but didn't want to give up dry traction? Then it becomes a matter of what is BETTER in a more versatile situation, and less of, "Which is better, A or B?"
Furthermore, if we begin to define desireable qualities in a wheel, such as light-weight, strength, low cost, and predictable traction, then we can define the ideal, but admittedly nonexistant, wheel. A wheel being better in an "all-around" sense, then, is one that more closely approaches this IDEAL.
That said, I think your perfect Technomagnesio $3700 3kg wheels fall even shorter than heavier Konigs and 5Zigens. Why? You said it yourself: "There's always something that's just leagues better and more expensive, but not something any of us would ever own." See what I mean? Why would it be better? Any wheel is better than one you can never have, right?
Therefore, a BETTER wheel DOES exist, and these discussions ARE worthwhile. Always.
