WHEEL NUT QUESTION AND ROTOR COMMENT

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Late last fall I had the breaks done at my dealership. Brakes were pulsating and dealership told me I needed new rotors. 2009 ex35 with 50,000 miles. I agreed and one month later I notice the rotors are rusting. You can see them rusting through the stock rims. I complained and I was assured that they would take care of the problem at the begining of the new year. I decided to have the problem taken care of when I was due for the next oil change. I took the car in to get serviced this month only to be told that all rotors rust and infiniti could do nothing about it. My regular service manager was no longer working there. I contacted the supervising service manager. He told me that infiniti offers two rotors one that rust and one that does not. I told him why did they put after market rotors on the car? He assured me that they are both infiniti brands. They agreed to replace them at no additional cost to me. Now the invoice says replace with OEM rotors. I now have a question, I was told that the bolts to the tires may need to be replaced because they are two part bolts and one of the part are showing signs of swelling. First I ever heard of this. Anybody else been told this?

First issue: Rotors rust, regardless - and it's harmless. The "swept surface" cannot be coated with anything, and anyone who says they won't ever rust doesn't understand metalurgy or chemistry. The rotor HAT can be coated or plated to prevent flash corrosion, but not the swept surface.

Second issue: This is correct. Stupid design on Infiniti's part. Search the forum for 'two piece lugs.'

BTW, the proper description for the part you're looking at is 'wheel nuts' or lug nuts.'

Thanks for your reply. Yes its the HAT that I was talking about. If I had full hub caps it would not have been an issue. I did do look up the wheel nuts and they do seem to rust. Why make them two piece, just to save money? Thanks AZhitman.

I'm honestly not sure why they did them that way... it certainly didn't save money in the long run.

I think it was some non-engineers way of making a fancy lug design without spending the money, but it's a stupid design. Standard lug nuts have worked fine for a century.
