I am going to be in the market for some rims, and as of now I have only been looking at infiniti take-offs...... Seeing that the ones on ebay are stupidly overpriced, and I have yet to contact a dealer (which will probably be expensive also), aftermarket rims seem to be a good route....... But, I have heard it mentioned that the rims arent designed to handle a Qs weight........ So, is there any way of telling if an aftermarket rim can support the Qs weight without bending????

Most good rims will have the load rating somewhere on it.

A good rule is to look at rims that are designed for a heavy vehicle. If the company is marketing the wheel towards a lighter vehicle, there is a good chance of the wheel bending or going out of round easily.

If you can get a forged rims, it would be the best. But the cost is high.

Centerline makes a nice line of forged alloys - Light and strong.

For the same quality, you're not gonna beat the price of a set of take-offs.

Call Joe - He has some old Q takeoffs (17" tourings) and some G35 rims with tires...

Unfortunately there are NO specification for out of round or bending............only that aftermarket wheels will not fail or fracture during warranty. And as with factory wheels if you hit a curb or a pot hole you are on your own!

Heavy wheels does not mean stronger wheels as the wheel weight just adds to the wheel damage.

look for mustang GT wheels, you should be able to find them cheap since most guys upgrade to cobra wheels or aftermarket, and if they have tires, they're a good size for the Q. and if you break them, just pick up another set.

I doubt that Mustang wheels can handle the weight of the Q. Also, they would not be hubcentric to the Q.

I had a set of Eagle Alloys - 077, (17 x 8) made for Mustangs. They had the right offset, but alas were not up to the task of holding up the Q.

The went out of round. They were not hubcentric to the Q, either.

How about these?? They're infinit, but no center caps.... I am sure I could get some of those no problem.....

Not bad for 400...... Ill figure another 200 for tires, do you think Joe could hook me up with some rims/tires cheaper than that???

$200 for tires? Are you on crack, Wes?

If you can find GOOD suitable name-brand 17" tires for the Q for under $500 mounted and balanced, I'll buy them for you.

p.s. I wonder if those 17's are "recalled" touring rims. I also wonder about the seller (no feedback).

If I could get a set of those for $200-$250, I'd buy them NOW.

Those are among the most desireable rims for the Q.

No way. If you trust the seller, I'd call and clarify how many sets of 5-spoke 17's he has, and get a feel for his business practices. Pay with a CC for protection, and if you can get those for $400 or less, that's a STEAL.

Let's talk about this *tire* thing, now... :nono

Ok, lets talk tires...... What size would I need, because I know NOTHING about tire size....... The only thing I know (or at least my hypothosis is) the last number is the size rim it will fit...... IE 255/60r15 tires will fit my 15in rims, so I will need like some 255/60r17, or whatever.....

And if I do get these (which I want to), I would get tires from this guy here in town.... He sells cooper tires (their pretty good), and he gets them really cheap, since he is the oldest cooper dealer around...... And they are good tires...... Unless they are really not so good...... He has hooked us up with tires and tons of other services, and has never let us down!!!

At any rate, I feel pretty good about this guy.... This is his first post (or close to) on ebay, and i doubt he would rip off his first customer......

Oh boy.

Wes, my friend, I like you. A lot. Which is why I'm gonna spend a while with this post.

SIZE - You're gonna want 245/45/17's for your 17" rims to retain the stock diameter AND a sufficient load rating. That's a real popular size, so that's a plus.

BRAND - Cooper may or may not make a tire in that size, so check it out. They're not a BAD company, but I don't think they make a great tire... More of what your mom and dad would buy for their grocery-getter. Certainly not the best for your purposes (if it even comes in your size).

SPECS - Also, you're going to want to check out the tires LOAD RATING. Find one with at least a 95 load rating. Finally, stick to a tire with a V speed rating or better. Speed rating is a good measure of the internal construction of the tire, and even if you don't plan on driving fast, you need a VERY stout tire to withstand the severe punishment a 4200-lb, 278-hp car can dole out.

As far as the eBay guy, well... I don't know what to say. You're very trusting. The first customer is the MOST likely to be ripped off. If this guy sends you four bent rims, you're screwed. I'd hate to see you get hosed. I got screwed by a seller with a good rep (sold me a bent rim) and I got him banned from ebay. But it cost me $119 to replace the rim, and a ton of hassle and time and stress.

(FYI, 255/60/17 would be big tall goofy-looking truck tires).

Well, the guy said he would give me a guarntee..... I have yet to get back to him about it......

And just for kicks, I went out and looked at my tires, and they have a 96 rating, and their H rated...... I assume that is what the 96H...... I'll have to investigate a little more........

By the way hitman, I appreciate mucho!!

Cooper makes and sells high performance tires built for big, heavy, sedans, under its Avon brand. They know how to segment their market, and your dealer has you in the wrong segment!

Cooper Cobra ZHP will be your best bet from their lineup.

Avon? Very little market access, unless you're looking for motorcycle tires. No money to be saved there.

I just bought 4- 16 x 7.5 rims oem 300zx 2 were perfectly fine two were bent and I went to pick them up.

At $250 for four the deal was still good even if I have to spend another $200 getting them straightened.

When you spend less than $300 per wheel you are gamb|ing big time, just as you are when you buy used.My experience with 3 sets ofnew oem 15" wheels has been good, they each lasted thru 4 years of use [that was the warranty afterall]...........remember the 5.5" of tire sidewall shock isolated the wheels quite well but how does a wheel react to 5.0' or 4.5".

I surely hope the oem 17',18",19," hold up as well, as you have seen some of the 17" have already been recalled.

When you are in the 17 inch and higher range, it is only a matter of time before the wheels get bend or at the minimum, go out of spec.

The spec on the Q45 wheel is supposed to be less than .012 inch. How many wheels are within spec brand new and how many stay in spec after a few potholes?

The more sidewall you have, the better the chances of your wheels staying round.

I have a set of ROH ZS wheels ( 17x8.5 & 9.5) from Australia. They are a bit on the heavy side, but they are strong.

I measured the lateral runout and they were still within spec after 2 years. That was a surprise. Maybe its because I am running 255/45-17, which is kind of tall in the 17 inch range.

All the other rims I have used were on the cheap side of the scale and they went out of round quickly. The Q is heavy and it needs strong wheels.

To me, the perfect balance between ride quality and handling is a 16 inch rim and wheel combo. If I could find some nice looking and strong 16x8 rims, I would run them.

So as far as load capacity, are the OEM wheels that came with the car the best bet???

Ok, kind of a side note.... I dont really think that I want bigger rims, I just want it to stand out a little more...... So i did a little research, but I need some confirmation.....

Could I possibly polish up the Qs wheels to have a mirror like finish??? Are the metals properties able/unable to be buffed/polished to look like that......?

yes, they can be polished, although this condition if often high-maintenance.

another avenue to look into is some nice forged wheels. which are, on the average, lightweight and stronger than cast.

of course, a 2 or 3 piece spun/forged combo makes the best wheel, but who can afford 900 dollars per wheel?

Wes - Those wheels can be polished to a mirror finish but should be done by a pro (polishing aluminum rims is a PITA).

Look into the Centerline forged rims - Cheap, light, strong, attractive...

Avon is coming into it's own, building it's own market image as a real contender....like Falken has done recently. Both companies build good quality tires at an affordable price. Only problem is, Avon has been slow in putting passenger car tires to market. If the passenger car tires do as well as their truck/suv tire lineup, you'll be hearing the name Avon in discussions about michelin, BFG, yoko, etc.

Do you think I could get those centerline forged for less than 400/set.....

I knew I should have gotten the G35 rims.... Brand new, and they went for like 550!! DANG I DIDNT BID!!!!

1) That'd be great, if you think you can buff a 22-pound wheel for 2 hours by maneuvering it over a buffer bolted to a workbench... Nope.

2) No. They're gonna be over $800 minimum. Check with Grant@tirerack.

3) Yes, you shoulda. What happened to the 17's on eBay?
