Hi all,

I have a m45 that I think has a wheel hub in need of replacement, but wanted to get some input before the trigger again.

I have replaced the hub on the driver side front, thinking that was the one, but was wrong, it did not solve the issue. I am about to purchase a second hub…

Notes:
  • The sound is vehicle speed dependent
  • The sound if not dependent on engine speed or load
  • The sound is not dependent on transmission or drivetrain
  • The sound begins at around 25mph and increases in pitch the faster I drive
  • The sound does not change based on side load (swerving left/right)
  • Don’t have play when off the ground, either up/down or left/right -outside some minor left/right when the rack and pinion engages.
  • The tires spin freely by hand when on jacks
  • There is no grinding sound when spinning by hand
Here is a video of the sound

I am looking to confirm that this is wheel bearing or something else before I drop another $200 bucks.

Thanks for any input you can give!

That definitely sounds like a wheel bearing. Because most Nissan/Infiniti bearings are cylindrical rollers, they don't always respond to turning when they first get a flat spot. To find out exactly which hub is faulty, get the wheels up and put a stethoscope on the back of the hub while turning each wheel by hand. Nissan wheel bearings are almost dead silent when they're healthy, any sort of ticking or clicking (no matter how faint) indicates a roller with a flat spot.
