I have a 3.5 SR six-speed from Nissan this week. Under hard acceleration there is a severe amount of what feels like wheel hop when shifting. Alternatively, it feels like a strut or motor mount is loose.

Is this typical of the car?

If not, what might be wrong with the car?

If you break the tires loose under acceleration the altima coupe has a good deal of wheel hop. Stiffer motor mounts would help, whether your factory ones are loose or not, I couldn't say. Most likely just the typical FWHP wheel hop you are feeling.

I've driven about 550 cars in the past decade, and cannot recall anything like this before. Then again, few of those cars have combined a manual transmission and FWD with this much power and torque. Closest would probably be the Acura TL.

The front tires are easily overwhelmed, especially in the current cold temps.

It is indeed wheel hop if you are doing a hard launch. When I had my Eclipse GS-T with full bolt ons I had a case of wheel hop.

The best way to solve it is lower the car with stiffer spring rate and better shocks or get Coilovers. I got Coilovers when I had the Eclipse and wheel hop was barely there. I have BC Racing coilovers now on my Altima 2.5s.

yep its wheel hop. the suspension needs some traction rods to eliminate the suspension flex that causes the wheel hop.

This is a picture of the prototype. The final product will look like this but with red anodized rods and stainless steel brackets:

QA1 Teflon-lined, High Misalignment Rod Ends...super strong!

Massive wheel hop especially turning and hitting a bump...thats the price we pay for that much in a FWD

Thanks, guys. I guess there's nothing wrong with this car after all.

Sounds like most fixes would impact ride quality. Maybe not the traction rods, but Nissan probably isn't about to offer them from the factory, is it?

My knowledge of mods is quite limited. First I've heard of traction rods on a FWD car, but assume they're common for very high HP with FWD.

I'm going to order some, I'm riding on some stiffer coilovers with an LSD and I can still get some wheel hop. traction rod should be the ultimate fix and still keep the ride comfortable, unlike motor mounts.
