I own a 2001 Infiniti I30 base model. I recently found 1 issue on my car since I've owned it, which is now going on 8 yrs now. Not too bad really. Ok,.. The problem is this, I have a winding sound noise coming from the front passenger side wheel,,I inspected the tire, brakes, and found that my bearing has some play when you grab the top of the wheel. To my experiences it was usually a wheel bearing. Is this procedure hard and what is required here?

Thanks.
Ray

might as well replace the entire hub.

You can replace the bearing but it requires the hub to be pressed out and then the bearing pressed out. You may be able to find a shop to do the press work for you for minimal charges.

The test I've heard of for wheel bearing is smooth turn. FA-6 does talk about play as well though.

Winding sound, LOL. I've heard squeaking, squealing, humming, resonating and so on for wheel bearings but not winding sound.

You can take the wheel bearing out with a sledgehammer and some bricks. Or, hydraulic press.

Haven't had much experience with it then, I take it. Also, bricks and a sledghammer? Good way to ruin something you don't want/need to ruin.

My buddy did it for me once for a Honda. Quite a workout. You have to hit the damn thing over and over again for almost 10-15 minutes.

But, yeah, there is a method to the madness. Otherwise, you'd seriously hurt yourself.

I really appreciate all of the people who quoted me on my question on that topic. So, It was very-very helpful to have that repair manuel for the torque info and other issues as well.

Thanks again,
Ray

Hi rlimI30. This might help

Things you will need:

Channelocks
Bearing race driver tool
Large adjustable wrench
Socket
ratchet set
Assorted wrenches
rags
punches
grease seals
Wheel blocks
Safety glasses
A jack and a pair of jack stands
New wheel bearings
bearing grease
cotter pin

Now here's how to replace a wheel bearing:

-Remove your disc brake calipers and caliper bridge to remove the rotor.
-Remove the bearing cap. This is a press fit and to remove it grab it with your channelocks and work it back and forth until it pops off. Be careful not to crush it.
-Once the cap is off you will see a cotter pin, remove the cotter pin and remove the retainer ring. If your vehicle has a castellated nut, you will not have a retaining ring.
-Using your channelocks or adjustable wrench, remove the nut from the spindle.
-Next remove the outer wheel bearing and washer.
-Slide the rotor or drum off the spindle.
-Remove the grease seal and take out the inner wheel bearing.
-Wipe all the old grease from inside the hub.
-Remove the bearing races from the hub.
-Take a punch with a flat narrow tip and place it on the back of the race.
-Tap the race out, alternating from side to side so it comes out evenly and doesn't get cocked in the hub.
-Once it's out, flip the rotor or drum over and do the same for the other race.

13. Clean the inside of the hub with some rags.

14. Make sure the spindle is clean as well.
