Hi.

My 96 I30 has a vibration problem over 60 mph. It isn't only streering wheel but also the entire body is. So I've been in several shops to take tire balance, alignment, and check the suspensions. Even the tires and rims are upgraded but it still has the problem.

When the car was lift up yesterday at the shop, I heard some noise while the left rear wheel was spining. It is like a grinding noise at the some point. I told mechanic about the noise but he didn't listen to me. I doubt that the wheel bearing has worn down. What do you guys think?

If the wheel bearing is bad, can I replace by myself? Do I have to buy any special tools for that job?

Thanks.

when the wheel is turned you might justbe hearing the brakes rubbing which would not be an issue. if it's the bearing you can do everything yourself except pressing out the old one and pressing in the new one. any play on the wheel when jacked up?

Really? How can I know whether the bearing is bad or not? Even the brake pads were installed at the last summer. What I knew is that when the brake pads are just replaced, it makes that kinds of sound. Besides the other wheels are fine. I mean they don't make any rubbing noise. What do you think?

Thanks.

I think the easiest way to tell is if while the car (or just the wheel) is up in the air. Try rocking the wheel in and out from the wheel well. If it rocks then the bearing is probably shot.

Also I noticed when mine went that the vibration went away when I turned and put extra load on the wheel. SO if its the left rear wheel, next time your above 60mph turn to the right in a bend in the road or something and see if the vibrations go away.

I took the wheel, rotor, and caliper off and then turned the hub bearing assembly but I couldn't listen to anything. After that, I tighted the wheel and rotor on and then spined again without caliper. There weren't noise.Once everythings is back, it made noise again. I took a video. At the video you can listen the noise from the brake pad. How can I show the video to you guys? Thanks.
