I have Falken Azenis and I'm very happy with them. They stick like glue! But I don't have as much power as you do and I don't drag race, so keep that in mind.

I'd run some BFG Comp TA's or G Force 2's in the back on your 16's.The 18's will destroy your 60' time and limit your mile an hour on the other end.

BTW, the tire size I would use is 235/60/16. That's about the biggest radial you can cram on there. Or you could go with a 26x10.5x16 ET Street from Mickey Thompson, but they have 0 (none, nada, don't even try it) traction in water and will cause you to lose control in it.

then you shouldnt be running 18's. their heavy, and mess with your gearing, and honestly probably wont give you more off-the-line grip.

if you really need off-the-line grip (you know, since street racing is so competitive like that....) get a set of BF goodrich drag radials, and call it a day. your car will handle like piss, but it'll hook up in a straight line(try a 225-50-16)

What are your thoughts on the 300ZX n/a wheels? Should I try to get some for $300(wheels & tires) or save more $$$ and get some aftermarket wheels? Weight is a big consideration as well as money.

Obviously you don't get it.Launching and powershifts have NOTHING to do with weather you win or lose a race. The only time shifting comes into play is when you miss a gear.

Tires will not effect your shifting negatively unless you are going to a harder compound.Seeing that your car makes 250hp, it must be A: Turbo or B: Nitrous.

On a turbo car you would go with a drag radial so that if you should launch high enough in the RPM's that you spin the tires would simply heat and catch unlike a slick that would simply grab and break your puny stock halfshafts.

On a nitrous car youshould go with a slick of some sort so that immediately after lanching (don't do a massice clutch dunp to launch) you will be able to spray the car without worrying about a loss of traction.

300zx wheels are fairly light, cheap, and provide a nice selection of sticky tires(225-50-16) worth it in my opinion..but they will require spacers to clear coilovers in the front.-chet

They seem like a good idea to me too. I didn't have my money right or I would have them already. I'll try to make a sacrifice and pick them up if I can.

Sticky rubber will help alot man. In fact, it makes all the difference. I run Falken Azenis and they stick really well. There's some much better/more expensive tires that will stick even better. The Falken's are surprising good in the rain too. They aren't reputed for their wet traction, but they stick much better wet or dry than some Michelins I put on the 200SX.

Keep in mind that I try my hardest to get these tires to break loose when I drift, but when they heat up and get really sticky, its almost impossible to drift them.

Getting into a better tire in the same size will do more to improve traction than going bigger in most cases. Yokohama AVS ES100s, AVS Sports, Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EPs, the list goes on and on...
