Well, after 20+ years of playing around with car audio, I blew my first speaker last night. Got a little "randy" with a 150hz test tone and one of the new Infinity 6.5" mids went spssssst. Now it sounds all "tinnie" when playing. Could be something else, but I doubt it and won't know until I start messing with it this afternoon.

Does makes me consider getting some higher-quality mids and probably removing the pre-amp to ensure it won't happen anymore (or simply not play a 150hz test tone as loud).

Anyone have a pair of Quart QWD mids they wanna get rid of cheaply? ;)

yo audatitious, my roommate is selling his Kappa Perfect 6.1 setup because he is now sponsored by Morel. I bet you he would sell you just the mids and the x-over. They are in great shape and I bet he would sell you cheap. Let me know if this interests you.

Oh and... on the speaker blowout... welcome to the club. In my first system I had a pair of Kenwood 7x10s (yup 7x10s) in the back of my first car, an 88 Chevy Cavalier 4 door, on my PPI A404.2. Those 7x10s rock btw and if they still make them, they should be considered for any early Q45, not sure if they would fit the J30... they are huge. ANYWAYS... one day I decided to mess with add-on tweeters, basically bridging the 4 ohm Kenwoods with a pair of free Pyramid (go ahead and laugh) tweeters. The tweets were rated at 20 or so watts per speaker. The Kenwoods and the Pyramid tweets were sharing 100 PPI Art Series watts per side when my car was chosen to be the music source for a bonfire party out at my girlfriend's house. I cranked it up and for about 30 minutes everything played fine. Then sizzle...POP! But the music kept playing. I went over as soon as I could to see what happened. The resistor on the tweeter blew completely apart, the tweeter blew, and it smelled almost like peanut butter for some reason. I couldnt believe that the system kept playing after that, but it did for 5 more hours till we packed it up and either passed out or went home. That was my first blown speaker.

What is the difference between the Kappa mids and the mids from the cs set? How much and how soon to get them to me ;)

I am also looking to change over as well (if necessary). Any comments on the following (shows the price I can get them as well):

ALPINE SPX-177A ($142)FOCAL 165V2 ($200)Rainbow Dream Series ($150)JL Audio XR650-CXi ($180)JL Audio VR650-CSi ($175)DIAMOND AUDIO S600s ($280)Diamond Audio M6 M661 ($195)a/d/s 236is ($179)

I will not be competing, but want something clean and clear that can take an occasional beating. The Quarts I had did a good job, but they are old and distorting during mid-bass transients, probably due to the crappy composit material they are made from and an uneven mounting location. The Infinity mids I have now (and blew) sounded OK until you started to power them up, then the mid would start to distort (kick drums at 1/3 volume and up would start to distort). I don't want to build fiberglass door enclosures in the Maxima like I did for my Probe either. I've been away so long from the audio industry I simply don't know what is good anymore.

:help
