well, if you want good upgrades that is managable, CAI or any intake, exhaust, run on mobile 1 fully synthetic oil, change the spark plugs (ya ya regular maintenance stuff, but makes a difference ;D) hmm i would say turbo, but thats a little too drastic for now i think.

Upgrading the ECU would be nice also. That's things i can think of from the top of my head that should all cost under $1400.

try searching for KA upgrades, theres many of us poor people that should have some KA upgrades ;D

searh on ebay dude lots of cheap bolt ons on there. Like Cold Air Intake, Exhaust, chip, wires, ingnition.

Yup, lots of cheap parts to be had on here and places like ebay. You can get a header dirt cheap, exhaust cheap, intakes super cheap, plugs, wires, short throw shifter, maybe a set of cams, etc.
