Whats yer idle?

I have a feeling my idle is low for some reason. Although it is a little random at times but it is usually under 800 and above 500. I think this is low. It is making sounds cause of the old engine. The low idle creates that repetitive clunking of the lifter stoleniod and also seems to make the engine shake like a diesel.

800 ~ 500 sounds right. Did you check the knock sensor?

I wasn't aware that they could be set; most everything else can't. Nonetheless, mine runs at 800.

Need to be specific. With the engine fully warmed up, the transmission in D, your foot on the brake and no alternator or AC running should be about 650 rpms.

Will be higher in Park, Neutral, at lower engine temperatures or with accessories ON.

Idle screw adjustment is just low enough for the automatic controls to do their job, but high enough to keep things running if the automatic control system fails.
