Well for the second time tonight my flywheel loosened up. It happened on a miss shift to second instead of forth while racing a SR 240sx.

But the last time it happened i know i corrrectly torqued the bolts and put loctite on them.

Is it possible it is not balenced and is slightly loosening but once the opposite torque is put on when downshifting drastically completely loosens it?

Or i have heard of people using the flex plate bolts instead of the flywheel bolts but i am almost 100% posative that i am using the correct bolts.

Any idea?

i would buy new flywheel bolts, and no theres no way you used flex plate bolts, the stock flywheel is thicker than the flexplate bolts so they wouldnt even thread in, but i bet since youve removed your flywheel a couple times, the bolts have stretched, just goto any specialty bolt store you have in your area, and ask for M10x 1.00 bolts, i believe they are around 35mm long, then reinstall it and so forth with new bolts and loctite.

Make sure you ask for Grade 8 bolts or better. You can get M10x1.0 bolts at Home Depot but I wouldn't hold my flywheel on with them. =]

it shouldn't cost much to get the flywheel+clutch assy. combo balanced. I would try that with some new bolts also. How do you know that the flywheel loosened up?

well first off you cant win a race by shifting into 2nd instead of 4th, but i think i would have , i was starting to pull on him because he went first from a roll so i had to catch up then pass and i was on my way untill i did that.

i know it is loose i can hear it shacking all around and feel it wobbleing.its doing the same exact thing that it did the last time it loosened up.

I've seen stretched bolts too. when I put my motor together the first time I accidentally looked at the wrong torque specs and over torqued them. When I pulled them out they were VISUALLY strechted. It was pretty crazy.

Mine were the same way. I decided to try them again though, and they of course didn't thread right, but I torqued them down anyway, and stripped the bolts AND the crank threads... ::sigh:: some days I think I exist purely to provide an example of what NOT to do.

Point being, buy some new bolts. Its around $32 for 10 at a dealership if you want to go OEM. Nissan only sells them in packs of 5, hence the two extra.

well i finally got around to going out in the cold and wet to drop the transmission.

Get it out and notice on the pressure plate that one of the clips that holds the diaphragm on the plate is missing. So ill need for it to be repaired or something Dee.

take the plate and disc off and 3 of the flywheel bolts were taken off my hand and then 3 more by wrench and 2 that are only a few threads loosened will not come out any farther.

What do i do with the two that are stuck?

i also came up with a good idea to keep the bolts from looseneing up again. Just like what nissan used to keep the turbo to exhaust manifold bolts on. I might make up a sheet metal ring with tabs the fold up on each flywheel bolt.

Just send it to me dude and I'll get it taken care of for you. Most of the guys are pretty correct about the flywhell bolts being stretched. I'll admit, I've never ever changed any of my bolts in the last 8 years, but they are starting to round-off so I'm in the process of ordering some as we speak. Sorry you are having issues with your car, but hopefully some new flywheel bolts will square that issue away.

I always use an impact wrench on the flywheel bolts with some loctite. Never had a problem.
