drove to nashville to pick up a friend from the airport today, averaged an all time best of about 17mpg!!! w00t! go me!

anyway, the car started doing something funny. when i gave it gas from about 80mph, the car would buck and slow down. only gas in 5th from about 3600 and up after youve been cruising for awhile will make it do this. im going to check the oil tomorrow - sounded fine, no knocking and it didnt read anything wrong on the gauges or safc, however i did notice the car lacked power for a little while after it did this.

i was really paranoid and drove 2/3 the way from nashville to huntsville at 55-60mph as to keep the rpm at a sane level in case i heard bad sounds or saw smoke or something. maybe the turbo not getting oil and choking up? something far worse? all your suggestions are welcome. thanks guys!

remove your turbo and inspect for leaks it might be that coz if the the motor is revving fine but at a certain speed it slows down which means when the turbo hits max booost its not flow as good. another thing check your MAF it might be about to crap out. tjis are just some ideas i would check first.

5th from about 3600

3600, you shouldnt even be in fifth. ..... maybe 2nd or third. but you shouldnt use 5th till your around 4500-5500 rpm , your just bogging the car down and thats why its bucking and slowing.

Heck no!!! I was in 5th the whole way home today!!! And I was only going 40mph. Granted we just got 6" of snow, but still. You could tell it doesn't have the torqe my ol' KA had, but it still did pretty well. It wasn't bucking by any means.

Well.... most likely you've answered your own question without even knowing it :)

I get 20mph city driving.... you're MPG are WAY too crappy, even for this motor.

Clean your MAFS and also change your o2 sensor if you haven't already. Those will affect drivability and also will get you better MPG.

Also, check your pipe fittings for any leaks. BOost loss might be why the car bucks.

checked for leaks, dont have any. ive tried to find out why i get such bad gas mileage before and so the o2 sensor is relatively new, the mafs is cleaned (do it regularly now, hehe) and i checked the turbo today and it seems to have no play whatsoever. it does have an amount of oil in the intercooler piping rivalling the whole middle east. if its not from the turbo then should i perhaps run a compression test and prepare for a rebuild? by the way it seems to do it in all gears now. thanks for the ideas guys! keep them coming!

anyone else? please?

it doesnt hesitate when i get it to to about 3500-4k rpm during around town driving, so ive been doing that instead of trying to make my $20 dollars worth of gas last all week. it hasnt made any impact on the gas mileage as far as i can see, and it sure is a helluva lot more fun.

help?

it isnt fixed yet...but if anyone cares it did do 0-60 in about 5 and 1/2 seconds when i timed it the other day. used a friend so it was fairly accurate, and we did it several times with the same result. it surprised me, i guess the really low outside temperatures help power tremendously.

Lots of blowby? Maybe the rings are just shot...that'd explain the oil in the IC pipes if you have that hooked up. It could also explain your lack of power (but not the 5.5 0-60).
