Whats up with my gas mileage?

I've got a 2000 i30t and i'm getting about 12 miles per gallon in city driving. It should be getting 20 miles per gallon. Could there be something wrong with the car? is there a way of checking a problem with out taking it to a mechanic?

Is the check engine light on?

Poor fuel milage is usually the result of something like a bad knock sensor or bad emissions equipment. Most of those would cause the CEL to illuminate as well.
