I was wondering what the Largest screen you think will fit into the headrests of the QX56?

I dont have my QX56 yet, but I'm trying to make plans for the type of audio/video system to install into it.. The screens that pop down from the roof/center block to much of the rear view for my liking when lane changing etc (keep in mind my limited test drive with this)

I was thinking of adding in either 4x apple ipad's who's size seems too big (Height: 9.56 inches (242.8 mm) Width: 7.47 inches (189.7 mm) Depth: 0.5 inch (13.4 mm)

As I think that would be a great device to watch movies on for the kids, and with the build in 3G wireless, I could use it to watch internet TV and stuff easy; plus the touch screen everything is ready to go (solid state drives so no need to worry about vibrations/bumps)

The other option is to stick in an apple TV and do the same sort of thing with video only;

I know the apple TV is easy to sync with 802.11 - the ipad I don't know yet if it can sync via 802.11 or not to upload videos play Mp3's pictures etc...

Basically, I don't want to use a DVD player... and this seems like a nice way to do something;

I'm fairly certain the ipad is too big, but was thinking maybe someone had some innovative ideas on how to make use of it;

Worst case, I could get conventional screens, and mount them and use the apple TV to show the video (if I swap out the drive for a SSD drive..

any idea's or thoughts on how to do something a little more slick that just adding a DVD player or two?

thanks in advance;

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I think you'd want to start with measuring the headrests.

Take a second look at that. While I haven't checked out this issue in a QX56 or Armada, the bottom of the screen only intrudes slightly in the rear view on my Titan. And sitting up high, I still see fine behind as most things that are relevant are down low anyways. The only real complaint I have about the rear screen is its size. But that can be remedied with a Myron and Davis screen that pretty much mounts into the existing overhead compartments and supposedly matches the interior colors.

Look into Western Digital TV. Plug it into the analog jacks in the center console and you are good to go. This thing plays ALL movie formats from a USB stick and costs about 90 bucks shipped. The iPad and Apple Tv are overkill for 8 or 9 inch screens, although the WDTV will play 1080p.

I am currently using a Popcorn Hour in my QX56 and am shuffling it back and forth to the car from the house. I am seriously considering the WDTV so I can just leave it in the QX permanently. Then I will only need to bring my USB stick when I want to watch new movies.

I have the WD and it's real nice on trips...I also put in a My Book and have tons of movies for the road.

I'd like to do some headrests too and not use that small screen on the roof.

Thanks for the notes guys....I think I'm going to do the apple TV for the media device, I'm going to swap out the internal drive for a Solid State Drive if possible. and store the movies on there so I don't get HD issues with all that movement.

Since I use MACs for for pretty much everything this makes the most sense to me I think. I can also for sure have it Sync up with the home PC using the 802.11n standard.

It appears there is a small storage area hidden under the rear trunk area that I can put the devices in... since I'm a little worried about water damage and stuff; I think I can use some stuff from these guys:

http://www.otterbox.com/waterp...-3000/

to protect the apple TV from water damage and stuff...

I think I have a pretty decent design in mind... so when I get going on this, I will put some pictures up and stuff... I don't think I will get to completion until June on this... but thats okay.. I'm going to try and do most of it myself if I can, maybe take a week off work and string this together for some weekend horror, oops, I mean fun :-)

If any one has some good suggestions on displays to use, Id like to heat about them... I think I also need to figure out a little better what kind of batter/inverter setup to use so I can power the apple tv while the car is off with no risk to starting the car, but giving the system enough time to copy off what could be very large amounts of data when it syncs' with itunes...

if you have some thoughts around that, please let me know... I was going to go to battery world and see if they can build me a custom cell I can cram into that space under the rear cargo area...
