Is there a difference?

I thought all S14's were black "notch-top" with VVT. Am I wrong?

Other than age, they are the same. The only reason why they would specify Zenki or Kouki on a website is to give you an idea of how old the engine is

I'm finishing my s14-s14 swap right now. Basically they are the same. A few vacuum lines under the throttle body seem to be in a slightly different configuration between the two, but aside from that, they are pretty much identical. In regards to you swap, keep in mind that the ECUs are different. And use the KA transmission harness. Good luck!

Don't know if this helps or not, but the difference in the s13 between the "K's" and "Q's" is NA vs turbo.

the newer motors ('97+) had 'notches' cut in the front timing chain cover between the 2 cam's (you'll see the flat area looking at the front of the motor). Also those ribs are there on a 180sx blacktop but not there on a redtop S13 motor.

The newer motors had stronger pistons, and some of the VERY last ones off the line had the stronger S15 rods as well.

I THINK the pistons are the same ones as in the GTiR but don't hold me to that. My freind Rock knows a lot more about the differences than I do so I'll ask him and update this if I was wrong.

So the newer motors are stronger, that's the main difference (but the older ones arn't exactly weak anyhow).

That's good news paul. Yay! I have strong pistons! My SR is a '98. And people always say "S14's have less potential than S13's because they are low port!" Whatever...

Paul, you aren't 100% correct. I have seen 3 different S13 cylinder heads. One with no ridges (like mine), one with full ridges (blacktop S13's), and also another creature with ridges that go halfway down. This one was a redtop. I'm assuming that the redtop with ridges was very late model. Maybe 93-94? I am not sure, but I know it exists.

there were no redtops with ridges, that was the blacktop S13 motor. If you have anything else it's because sombody painted it or built somthing out of junk yard parts.

No, I know what the no ridges and ridges look like. This one had ridges that only go halfway down the head. I saw it in person. It couldn't possibly be painted or something from junkyard parts, unless you want to cut the head in half and put the bottom half of a redtop on the top half of a blacktop.
