I just bought a 1992 240sx as is, This is my first car. It doesn't run, I bought it from my aunt and uncle. When they bought it a year ago it was running. My uncle said something about the bottom end. What are the common problems with the 1992 240sx motor.

thanksJohnny

look to see if it has any thing on the head that will mess it up. Like leaves and stuff. Get a new vavle cover gasket and replace the cover. See if its got oil and coolent. I'd drain it and replace oil and coolent but this might be a wast of like 30$ if you need a rebild or somthing. Is it auto or 5 spd? good luck.

it is auto, but i will convert it to 5 speed, once i gain a little more experience with it and once i can get it running, so you said i check the head for leaves and stuff, I'm new to this so, what is the head, after that i should drain the oil and the coolant and replace it, put the valve cover pack on with new gaskets. But what should i do about the bottom end, because my uncle said something about the bottom end being the problem.

thank for your help

johnny

well if it is the bottom end if you dont know alot yet I would not have you take the head off and start geting to the pistons and crank. the head is the thing your seeing on the top of the moter that the valve cover goes on. As far as what the pblem can be thers lots of things a bent rod bad berings hidro lock. but with out tering the moter down this is about the best i can tell you. You can take it to a shop but lol thats a lot of cash. I would go to napa kragan auto zone ext.. and get a haynes or othe brand of car maniwal ( yes i have bad spelling 39 kids in one class and 1 teatcher will do that to ya lol) and read the rebild and engen overhall part from front to back. But dont rip apart the moter after this it will just help you know more about what your working with. If you have any tools make sher evry thing is set on the car mainly the timing set is fine and the disributer is in then pull out a 27 mm socket (i think its 27 on my sohc so might be the same for you) put it in nutral and the big pully at the boutom of the car try to move it i have not realy looked at the engen bay so your fan might be in the way but if you can get it to move some you can rule out hidro lock also look around the moter for any holes in it .I was thinking yes dran the oil and coolent look for coolint to have oil in it and the other way around. If you have any freinds with engen know how i would have them come help. If it is somthing on the bottom end you may be looking at a rebild or a swap. but I would tryto see if you can get it to fire and find out what the problem is hope i helped if you got any more Q just ask we'll try to help.

I have found that two of the major problems with 240's is - coolant leaks into the cylinder. i believe due to common leaking head gaskets - the tensioners that were used on the timing chain/belt is made of plastic, which shatter, thus losing tension, and making your car not run.

i pulled and engine out of the salvage yard and both things were wrong. the dude trashed his car for a really easy fix.
