It won't be too expensive to fix if you do it yourself.
Pick up a set of body hammers and dollys from harbor freight. ($30)Try to get pound out the dent as much as you can. A torch can be very helpfull to get the majority of the dent out by heating the panel before pounding it out. You can try to pound it out without a torch, but be carefull to avoid oil-cans. Hammer off dolly techniques can be used to get most of the dent out. Some hammer on dolly can be used and may be neccesary, however keep it to a mnimum to avoid stretching the metal.
Once you have most of the dent out and the panel has been returned to it's orignal contour, use a metal file over the damaged area. You will be able to see the low/ high spots by the marks the file makes. Tap out the rest of the low spots with the pick end of a body hammer. Use the file again and continue the pick and file untill the panel is damn near straight.
Theres no chance in hell you'll be able to metal finish it, so body filler must be used. Make sure you clean and blow the panel off. After properly mixing the filler/hardener to a uniform color, spread a tight coat of filler over the entire repair area. Make sure there are no holes in the filler because it will result in pinholes that are difficult to sand out.
Once the hardener dries, begin sanding with 40 or 80 grit paper to cut down the rough spots. After 80 grit move to 120 grit. If you start seeing metal show, try to avoid further sandng in that area. After sanding the entire area to as close to contour as possible, gently tap down any metal showing(high spots). You can now apply a thin layer of glaze putty to the entire panel. After that dries continue sanding with 80, 120, 180, then 240 before primer. Make sure to use guide coat during the sanding, it will help you see when the panel is straight.
After priming the panel, wetsand with 600 grit and use guide coat. Then move to 800 or 1000 grit.I won't talk about painting because I'm asuming you"ll just rattle can it.
Good luck!
