Hey Doc Antz, if you're bugging out about me and my oil changing routine on regular oil, which is not exactly at the 1000th mile anyways, you would probably choke some of my friends and they're stupidity... err, point of views on this subject. Some of the Audi guys swear oaths to use the most expesive and fancy full synthetic oil blend they can get their hands on, along with K&N oil filters and all that expensive stuff... every 1,500 miles, like clockwork, no b.s. I think this behavior has to do with Audi/VW having an engine that's pretty known for oil coking, that engine is called 1.8T (4 inline cylinders) and there has been numerous horror stories with those.
On the other hand some of my JDM friends (ricers) lol, feel like they have to keep up with the EURO guys in order to not be discriminated against and be called ricers so they also follow this... nah, j/k, the ricers just dont know what to do with their life savings and their minimum wage checks.
On a real note though, my biker friends, in my opinion, are the only ones that have a good point to change the oil frequently (1,000 miles) and with semi or full synthetic blend of oil, given that they ride their crotchrockets hard though, and I dont mean for the regular guy on a cruiser to change his oil so frequent. We run bikes at very high RPMs for long periods of time because they're designed to be driven that way and you can just imagine the goo paste these engines, at that temperature, would make out of regular oil. So the reason I do this on my car is habit.
My wife's truck gets oil changes by the mile intervals that the PMCS book says to follow which is 5,000 miles on regular oil, according to Lincoln/Ford. I feel pretty confident without doing any oil analysis, that my car's engine is in good "oil" shape, and it doesnt hurt my pocket to do a cheap oil change monthly. I know you mentioned that you've never seen an engine damaged by oil issues but I have, cornballs and women get affected by this year round. To this day I tell people that when I owned BMW's they paid for oil changes up to 50k miles and that they (BMW) used to do them 15k miles apart and they usually dont believe me. But as soon as I tell them they used Castrol Ultra Synthetic F1 GP blend, that costs $80 a quart, they go like "Oh, that's why man, that's that good sh*t" and of course there's no such such blend, it was just plain full synthetic Castrol, but people tend to think that because they're paying extra (getting overcharged) for stuff, that they must be getting the good stuff.
That's why I didnt opine on the Blackstone labs thread, everybody is free to do as they wish with their money and if you think you're getting your money's worth by sending your samples to them, I will be the first to attest there's no better feeling, especially if you're trying to figure out when you "should" change your oil. I stick to my el cheapo oil routine and change it monthly before it breaks down, because that works for me.
