The problem with that is, the person using the light gets used to having it there. They just wait for the light to go on to shift. Alot of times, they don't actually listen to the engine before/during/after a shift.
Now that I think about it, a shift light does have a use. If you have your radio/stereo turned up, you can't actually hear or feel what the engine is doing. In this case, A light comes in handy. Also, it might be good to set the light to go on ~500RPMs before redline. This would prevent you from over-revving the engine if you weren't paying attention.
Personally, I see no reason for them. If you depend on the light, you will usually get bad gas mileage(from shifting at high RPMs). I have driven manual cars without tachs, with tachs, with tachs/lights, and I actually prefer having no tach at all. I like having to listen and feel what the engine is doing.
