Get yourself a tube of the permatex grey be conservative and torque down the fasteners to factory spec and you will be set. I have been building motors for years and it works everytime!

Toss the cork in the garbage and use RTV.

I like Permatex Ultra Black myself

Agreed.....RTV FTW!! Just don't over-do it, get a nice bead on there and she'll seal perfect.

the shop that rebuilt (built) my KA24DE used RTV or something just like it.... I wish they didnt, mostly because I gotta remove my oil-pan to put the Bung on it for -T, and it's gonna be ANNOYING gettin into those grooves again with a razor like last time when I prepped the pan for them.

You actually need to be a little bit liberal with the RTV on the rear edge of the pan. If the rear main seal retainer is just a tad bit outta whack, it'll protrude through the RTV and make for a nice leak that runs up to the front of the pan on the driver side (low side), dripping near the A/C compressor. Mmmmmm, yeah, I have one.

I always use the "squish" method. Apply just enough sealant to where it has a slight amount squish out the side. Just a slittle squish mind you, not globs. This will ensure even coverage and no leaks.

I RTV the pan, put the cork on, then RTV the Block. Squish them all together and cut the half a tube off that squished out the sides when it dries.

i used RTV on the base of the pan fine coat to hold the gasket in place,,, no leaks since August 06.

for you guys who used the RTV only do you allow the air to hit it and harden a bit, or just slap it on?

i know lots of people have different methods

off topic

back in my sohc days i went to put some new o rings on my injectors....... well these *** clowns gave me the wrong size. so i had to look in the grass for the old ones. when i went to put them back on, they all broke. soooooooo i use RTV blue along with the broken rings and it held up for 2 months while in college. I however allowed them to sit in the air for an hour to harden to the thick rubber stage.

I personally run a small bead around the whole pan always going towards the inside of the bolt holes. I do NOT spread the bead the RTV. It squishes to where it needs to go.

Just remember what squeezes out squeezes in--I have pulled all kinds of crap out of oil strainers and galleys. the last thing you want is a big o log o rtv impeding your oil flow! If you get 1/16th inch diameter squeeze out the side I would say that is about right on the oil pan.

Don't use a razor, use a wire wheel.

I don't think I'd call that "overkill", I'd call it a failed oil pump waiting to happen.

What happens when a little chunk of that "sandwich" finds its way into your turbo oil line?

Well like WD said. Your filter catches it if it does go through the strainer. Also what someone else said too: What squishes on the outside, goes on the inside too. I've never had any RTV debris in my oil pickup. And I've never had the stuff on the outside break off after 50k miles, so hopefully the stuff on the inside doesn't either. Never had a problem yet.

Although my uncle, does use RTV to hold the rings in place while they seat... or so he says that's his reason. That man will use 4 tubes on a SBC, the pickup will be littered with RTV, and it will run 100k no problem.

So I guess it's the luck of the draw. Noone should be criticizing, but sharing what they do to help give this guy some ideas on what he should do.

Good luck!

I can see why someone would criticize that uber-gooper idea... It just sounds a little iffy when you think about excess goop going into your oil and such.

I see what you mean that it would stick to the inside just like it does on the outside and that the filter would pick it up as well. So now we know it is not that big of a deal....

On RTV they have instructions too... It says "put an even bead of X thickness all the way around in one continuious run" if i recall.. something like that.

I'm not saying toss nuts and bolts in there or leave the tube of RTV inside the pan when you install it for Christs sakes. I'm just saying a little RTV isn't gonna hurt anything.

Haha, I love when threads start big conversations. I bought a tube of RTV black yesterday, says it has maximum oil resistance and hardens quickly. I will do an even bead all the way around and go on the inside of the bolt holes. Sound Good?

Well, I finished the pan last night. That is the messiest **** I have ever delt with. I jacked up the motor a little bit, and dropped the front sway bar. If i had a lift it would have been much easier. I hope it doesn't leak cause I don't want to have to go back and do it all over again.
