Essentially correct. The same basic 4 speed auto was used in the Maxima for 20 years from 2nd gen all the way up to a few SL 6th gens.

Keep in mind that Maxima since 3rd gen offers an LSD option, all of which have model numbers ending in "V." Quest never had the LSD options, and no Quest shares EXACTLY the same trans as the Maxima.

In the FSMs under the A/T category there's a "Service Data and Specifications" section that has all the info you could ever want on this.

Here's a summary, though:

Maxima: 2000-2001 (VQ30DE): RE4F04W model 85X06 Final drive: 3.789Quest: 1993-2002 (VG30/33): RE4F04A model 80X77 Final drive: 3.789Maxima: 2002-2003 (VQ35DE): RE4F04B model 80X01 Final Drive: 3.789Quest: 2004-2006 (VQ35DE): RE4F04B model 89X01 Final Drive: 3.525Maxima: 2004-2006 (VQ35DE): RE5F22A (5at)Quest: 2007-20?? (VQ35DE): RE5F22A (5at)

So there's no other Nissan model besides the '00 I30 that has a 4AT that I can put in my '00 GXE?

FSM's? Im, I just woke up and don't know what the FSM's are. Please enlighten my dumb @ss.

In the FS/FT section @ another forum, a guy has an '02 Max's auto that he'd sell me... but I don't know that it'd work, and don't know what I'd have to switch out to make it work.

It may work. I'm not sure what the minor differences are that cause the change in model numbers. It could be minor internal upgrades that mean things are still interchangeable...you'd be best off talking to techs or owners who have hands-on experience for that. It's the same essential unit from '85 to '06, so I wouldn't be surprised '00 and '02 are interchangeable. But it's hard to say from just model numbers exactly what changed. It could be electronics that aren't cross-compatible which means there'd be more than just swapping the transaxle itself if it works at all.

FSMs are the factory service manuals. You can find them here. The section for automatic transmissions is almost always "AT." At the end of AT (on newer ones, sometimes toward the beginning, but always in the contents or quick guide that appears on the left) there's always a "Service Data and Specifications" section that shows all sorts of specs and info. You can use that to compare different models and different years against each other for matches. Kind of tedious, but once you figure out how the fsms are organized it's not bad at all. I spend a LOT of time buried in those things.

Hm, ok. Between the '00 and '02 trannys... Driveshafts are the same.... speed sensors are different though. I'm hoping I could wire the '02 units to the '00 TCU without too much difficulty...

The control solenoids are the same as well.

...and rebuild kits appear to be the same....

I'm gonna delve into my Haynes book for a while, and then I'll consult the FSM's.

Maybe with just a couple mods I might be able to put the '02 4at in my '00... (maybe?)

It'll probably work, then. Speed sensor should be a simple swap.
